This review focuses on the interaction between the essential element vanadium and 1,10-phenanthroline and polypyridyl ligands. It summarizes prior work on speciation studies for the vanadium-phenanthroline binary systems and hydrolytic studies of the metal ion. It also provides a comprehensive overview of different X-ray structures known to date and discusses the potential cytotoxic activity of vanadium-polypyridyl complexes.
