Assessment of future climate change impacts on water-heat-salt migration in unsaturated frozen soil using CoupModel

Hanli Wan et al.

Summary: Water, heat, and salt transport in unsaturated frozen soil are tightly coupled, and future climate change is predicted to increase salt accumulation in the soil, requiring effective measures to prevent salinization.

Critical review on soil phosphorus migration and transformation under freezing-thawing cycles and typical regulatory measurements

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: The freezing-thawing period is crucial for soil nutrient cycling. Phosphorus, a key nutrient for crop growth, mainly comes from soil but with low utilization efficiency. Research shows that freezing-thawing affects soil structure, phosphorus migration, and transformation, while biochar and humic substances have positive effects on soil during this period.

The effects of soil freeze-thaw processes on water and salt migrations in the western Songnen Plain, China

Yan Qin et al.

Summary: Seasonally freeze-thaw processes impact soil salinisation in cold and arid regions. This study examined soil FT characteristics in three typical landscapes in the western Songnen Plain, China, and found that alkaline-spot land had the strongest freezing process, leading to upward migration of soil water and salt which contributed to soil salinisation. The results help to understand the mechanisms of springtime soil salinisation.

Water and salt migration mechanisms of saturated chloride clay during freeze-thaw in an open system

Jianpeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the water and salt migration mechanisms in saline soils during freeze-thaw through experimental tests. The results showed that salt content affected the development of the freezing front, with matric suction gradient being the driving force of water-salt migration. Water and salt migration was asynchronous during F-T processes.

A finite volume-based model for the hydrothermal behavior of soil under freeze-thaw cycles

Tianfei Hu et al.

Summary: Freeze-thaw cycles in soil are driven by water migration, phase transitions, and heat transfer, which are closely coupled variables in the natural environment. A multi-physics model was established to simulate this process, considering water-ice phase changes and latent heat effects. The model was verified through laboratory freezing tests and applied to solve a railway embankment problem, showing robustness and flexibility of the algorithm.
