Coupling a Borehole Thermal Model and MT3DMS to Simulate Dynamic Ground Source Heat Pump Efficiency

Yifei Zong et al.

Summary: We propose a novel integrated model that combines local heat transfer simulation in borehole heat exchangers with field-scale heat transport simulation to dynamically simulate borehole geothermal systems. The model considers subsurface thermal perturbation, U-pipe circulating fluid temperature profile, and evaluation of ground source heat pump efficiency. MT3DMS is used for the field-scale heat transport simulation, and new Python modules are developed to solve the thermal transfer process within boreholes and interface with MT3DMS iteratively. The model is validated against analytical solutions and applied to complex test problems with heterogeneity and pumping.

Land Subsidence and Its Relations with Sinkhole Activity in Karapinar Region, Turkey: A Multi-Sensor InSAR Time Series Study

Osman Orhan et al.

Summary: This study used InSAR, GNSS, and groundwater level data to monitor land subsidence and sinkhole activity in the Karapinar basin in Turkey. The analysis revealed broad areas of subsidence and seasonal variability correlated with groundwater level changes. Results also indicated that sinkhole activity is limited to slow subsidence areas, reflecting strong cohesion of near-surface rock layers.

Management of saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers using different wells systems: a case study of the Nile Delta aquifer in Egypt

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: A study in the Nile Delta aquifer found that a combined well system of pumping, recharge and abstraction is more effective in controlling saltwater intrusion compared to individual measures. Increasing recharge was shown to have a greater impact on slowing down saltwater intrusion, with a retardation percentage of 19.5% compared to decreasing pumping at 6.2% and abstraction of brackish water at 5.9%.
