A review of microplastic pollution in seawater, sediments and organisms of the Chinese coastal and marginal seas

Yong Jiang et al.

Summary: The study summarized the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in Chinese coastal and marginal seas, revealing lower levels in seawater and sediments compared to other countries, but severe pollution in estuaries. Microplastics were widely detected in marine organisms, emphasizing the potential impacts on the marine ecosystem.

Occurrence and distribution of microplastics in water supply systems: In water and pipe scales

Xianxian Chu et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution has attracted widespread attention, and this study found that MPs are present in both water and pipe scale samples from a drinking water treatment plant and distribution system. The concentrations of MPs in pipe scales were higher than in water, with predominant particles being 50-100 micrometers in size. Nylon and polyvinyl chloride were the most abundant MPs in water and pipe scale samples, respectively. The drinking water treatment plant and distribution system effectively prevent MPs from entering tap water, reducing the risk associated with MP pollution.

Effects of chemical and natural ageing on the release of potentially toxic metal additives in commercial PVC microplastics

Jun Meng et al.

Summary: This study found that both chemical and natural ageing of commercial PVC microplastics can lead to the release of trace metals into the environment, with Pb showing the highest release. Additionally, the addition of PVC to soil significantly increased the release of Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn after incubation.

Interactions and effects of microplastics with heavy metals in aquatic and terrestrial environments

Noreen Khalid et al.

Summary: Contamination of waters and soils with microplastics (MPs) is a global environmental issue, posing a threat to ecosystems and organism health; The co-occurrence of MPs with heavy metals may enhance the transfer of toxic metals in the food chain; Understanding the interactions of MPs with heavy metals in different ecosystems is crucial for assessing their ecotoxic effects.

Potentially Poisonous Plastic Particles: Microplastics as a Vector for Cyanobacterial Toxins Microcystin-LR and Microcystin-LF

Carlos J. Pestana et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of microplastics to act as carriers for microcystins, achieving toxin concentration 28 times higher on plastic than in water. The experimental results show that adsorption of microcystins onto microplastics is a multifactorial process, dependent on various factors. The study also stresses the limitations of exclusively investigating microcystin-LR.

Biofilm influenced metal accumulation onto plastic debris in different freshwaters

Zhilin Liu et al.

Summary: Microbial biofilms rapidly colonize plastic debris in aquatic environments, accumulating chemical pollutants. Different plastic characteristics affect biofilm biomass, with metal accumulation on plastics higher than in surrounding water. Metal accumulation is influenced more by aquatic environmental factors than plastic properties.

Summary: Plastic pollution poses a global concern for its harmful impacts on wildlife, particularly the mechanism of additives leaching from plastics. Understanding the chemical identity and exposure to additives is crucial to assessing the risk to wildlife. While there is a breadth of knowledge on additive release from plastics in various industries, there are still limited reports with inconsistent experimental approaches in this area.
