Antimonite oxidation by microbial extracellular superoxide in Pseudomonas sp. SbB1

Liying Wang et al.

Summary: A bacterium named Pseudomonas sp. SbB1 was isolated, capable of oxidizing Sb(III) to Sb(V) without known Sb-oxidizing genes. The oxidation process is NADH-dependent and involves proteins producing extracellular superoxide at approximately 100 kDa. This previously unknown pathway has been observed in diverse bacteria and provides insight into the transformation of redox-sensitive pollutants in the environment.

Distribution and speciation of Sb and toxic metal(loid)s near an antimony refinery and their effects on indigenous microorganisms

Soo-Chan Park et al.

Summary: Although the effects of Sb contamination on surrounding environments and indigenous microorganisms have been studied, the impact of co-contamination of Sb and toxic metal(loid)s remains poorly understood. High Sb levels were found in topsoil samples near the refinery, while high concentrations of As and Pb, along with extremely high Sb contents, were observed in soil samples taken from greater depths near the landfill site. The study also suggested that microbial community compositions were significantly different in samples with high toxic metal(loid)s concentrations, with lower microbial populations, and that Pb may play a major role in controlling microbial community compositions at the site.

Mechanistic study of antimonate reduction by Escherichia coli W3110

Lixin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that Escherichia coli W3110, without known Sb(V)-reducing genes, was able to reduce Sb(V) to Sb(III). Transcriptome analysis and RT-qPCR results showed that Sb(V) threat had a negligible effect on the gene expression of strain W3110. Additionally, in vitro incubation experiments revealed that extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) played a key role in Sb(V) reduction.

Toxicity and bioavailability of antimony to the earthworm (Eisenia fetida) in different agricultural soils

Qianyun Zhong et al.

Summary: Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the toxicity of antimony (Sb) to earthworms in four different agricultural soils. The earthworms clearly avoided the Sb spiked soils, and the avoidance response was correlated to the exposure dose. Different toxic effects of Sb were observed in the four types of soils, with antimony being more toxic in sandy alkaline soil. The study provided comprehensive data on the toxicological effects of Sb in agricultural soil, which can contribute to ecological risk assessments.

Identification of Antimonate Reducing Bacteria and Their Potential Metabolic Traits by the Combination of Stable Isotope Probing and Metagenomic-Pangenomic Analysis

Weimin Sun et al.

Summary: Microorganisms play an important role in altering the speciation, mobility, and bioavailability of antimony (Sb), particularly in the reduction of Sb(V). By using DNA-stable isotope probing and metagenomics analysis, this study identified Pseudomonas and Geobacter as potential Sb(V)-reducing bacteria in Sb-contaminated sites, with Geobacter potentially playing a key role in Sb(V) reduction based on the presence of specific genes. This work provides valuable insights into the microbial community responsible for Sb(V) reduction.

Oxidation and incorporation of adsorbed antimonite during iron (II)-catalyzed recrystallization of ferrihydrite

Xiuling Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation and redistribution of adsorbed antimonite (Sb(III)) during Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization of 2-line ferrihydrite under anaerobic conditions. The results showed that a great part of Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) by ROS during the transformation process, reducing the mobility of Sb significantly. Antimony was transformed to phosphate-unextractable phase with 50%-70% of initially adsorbed Sb(III), and incorporated into secondary minerals by substituting the Fe atoms.

Effects of Fe(III) Oxide Mineralogy and Phosphate on Fe(II) Secondary Mineral Formation during Microbial Iron Reduction

Edward J. O'Loughlin et al.

Summary: The bioreduction of Fe(III) oxides by dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria leads to the formation of various Fe(II)-bearing secondary minerals, which are influenced by the mineralogy of Fe(III) oxides, phosphate concentration, and the availability of electron shuttles. The overall extent of Fe(II) production and the types of secondary minerals formed are highly dependent on these factors, demonstrating a complex interplay of mineralogical, geochemical, and microbiological factors.
