Efficient removal of microplastics from wastewater by an electrocoagulation process

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal performance, mechanism, and influencing factors of microplastics in wastewater treatment by electrocoagulation (EC). It was found that aluminum anode EC is an effective method to remove microplastics with a removal rate above 80%. The efficiency of microplastic removal by EC is influenced by electrolyte concentration and applied voltage density, with flocculation and charge neutralization occurring simultaneously during the process.

Hormesis-like growth and photosynthetic physiology of marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin exposed to polystyrene microplastics

Zuyin Chen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of pristine polystyrene microplastics (pMPs) on Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin. The results showed that microplastics had hormesis-like effects on microalgae growth, with the specific effects depending on the initial algae density and microplastics concentration. These findings are important for understanding the impact of microplastics on marine microalgae and aquatic ecosystems.

Removal of polystyrene microplastic spheres by alum-based coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) treatment of surface waters

Jinkai Xue et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a complex issue in water systems due to their diverse physical and chemical characteristics. This study investigated the removal of carboxylated polystyrene microspheres in real surface waters, finding that higher alum doses generally led to better removal of smaller microspheres, but no substantial improvement in removal of particles between 3 and 25 μm. Smaller PS microspheres were more effectively removed in both river and lake water sources, with the water source significantly affecting the removal efficiency.

Removal of polystyrene and polyethylene microplastics using PAC and FeCl3 coagulation: Performance and mechanism

Guanyu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal performance of PS and PE microplastics using PAC and FeCl3 coagulants. Results showed that PAC was more effective than FeCl3, especially in alkaline conditions. Adsorption and complexation were the main removal mechanisms, with the formation of new bonds enhancing the efficiency.

Phase transition of Mg/Al-flocs to Mg/Al-layered double hydroxides during flocculation and polystyrene nanoplastics removal

Ziying Chen et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics, an emerging pollutant, have attracted global attention. The use of Mg/Al-layered double hydroxides (LDH) for flocculation shows potential for removing PSNP. The study reveals that LDH can capture PSNP under different pH conditions, with removal efficiencies over 90.0%.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of organic compounds on the coagulation performance by affecting metal hydrolysis and nanoparticle properties during the coagulation process. The presence of low molecular weight organics was found to have varying effects on the coagulation performance of alum, with different chemical bonds playing a role in influencing the interactions.

Arsenopyrite weathering in acidic water: Humic acid affection and arsenic transformation

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: Arsenopyrite, a common metal sulfide mineral, weathers readily in the presence of humic acid (HA) and is influenced by factors such as temperature and acidity. Research findings showed that HA can form complexes with arsenic and iron ions, affecting the weathering behavior and mechanism of arsenopyrite. Electrochemical techniques were used to investigate the weathering process of arsenopyrite, providing valuable insights for understanding the fate and transport of arsenic in acidic conditions.

The global threat from plastic pollution

Matthew MacLeo et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution that accumulates and is poorly reversible in the environment can have significant negative impacts such as changes to ecosystems, biological effects, and societal impacts. Therefore, a global response is needed to rapidly reduce plastic emissions through reductions in consumption of virgin plastic materials and internationally coordinated waste management strategies.

Microplastic removal in conventional drinking water treatment processes: Performance, mechanism, and potential risk

Sang-Heon Na et al.

Summary: The study found that the removal efficiency of microplastics in traditional drinking water treatment plants is influenced by the size of microplastics, the type of coagulant, and water characteristics. They used X-ray microcomputed tomography technique and two-site kinetic modeling to discover that microplastics below 20 microns were retained by attachment to the sand surface.

Environmental fate and impacts of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems: a review

Sen Du et al.

Summary: The widespread use of plastic products has led to the global presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments, affecting the health of organisms. Studies have shown that most MPs in water environments ultimately break down into small fragments and sink to the ocean floor. The article also discusses the impact of MPs as carriers of organic pollutants and microorganisms on aquatic organisms.
