Temporal and spatial variability of carbonaceous species (EC; OC; WSOC and SOA) in PM2.5 aerosol over five sites of Indo-Gangetic Plain

Himadri S. Bhowmik et al.

Summary: The study in the Indo-Gangetic plain found that organic carbon (OC) dominates in the PM2.5 particles during winter, while water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) increases notably in summer. The high OC/EC ratio during winter and post-monsoon indicates biomass burning as the primary source, while WSOC shows a significant contribution from secondary sources with variations across different sites.

Biogenic secondary organic aerosols: A review on formation mechanism, analytical challenges and environmental impacts

Mithlesh Mahilang et al.

Summary: The review discusses the atmospheric reaction mechanism of BVOCs and the formation of secondary organic aerosols, highlighting differences between day and night in SOA formation. Daytime SOA formation is dominated by OH and O-3, while nighttime formation is dominated by NOx. Analytical techniques like 2D-GC/MS are essential for studying organic aerosols, and radiative forcing SOA is a useful parameter for evaluating environmental impacts.

General Mechanism for Sulfate Radical Addition to Olefinic Volatile Organic Compounds in Secondary Organic Aerosol

He Ren et al.

Summary: This study developed a method to study the reaction of sulfate radicals with various olefinic precursors, accurately controlling dissolved oxygen levels and using isomer-specific NMR to definitively identify and quantify the reaction products. Specific mechanisms for each precursor and a generalized mechanism for predicting sulfate radical reaction pathways were established, showing that carbon backbone fragmentation pathways dominate the mechanism. The observed organosulfate products in field observations of SOA indicate the potential relevance of this mechanism in the atmosphere.

Overestimation of Monoterpene Organosulfate Abundance in Aerosol Particles by Sampling in the Presence of SO2

Martin Brueggemann et al.

Summary: Organosulfates derived from monoterpene oxidation (MT-OSs) are widely found in atmospheric aerosol particles, but potential sampling artifacts from SO2 have been largely ignored. This study showed a significant increase in OS numbers and abundances when collecting aerosol particles from alpha-pinene oxidation in the presence of SO2. Field study results also demonstrated a decrease in MT-OSs abundances when SO2 was removed during particle sampling under atmospheric conditions. This highlights the importance of considering SO2 artifacts in both classical filter sampling and emerging analytical techniques in future studies.

Gas- and Particle-Phase Products and Their Mechanisms of Formation from the Reaction of Δ-3-Carene with NO3 Radicals

Marla P. DeVault et al.

Summary: Monoterpenes are a major source of biogenic volatile organic compounds emitted into the atmosphere annually. A study on the reaction of Delta-3-carene with NO3 radicals revealed the formation of first-generation ring-retaining and ring-opened compounds in the gas phase, while the particle phase consisted mainly of oligomers composed of acetal and hemiacetal dimers. These findings highlight the impact of monoterpene structure on the formation of multifunctional products and significant amounts of secondary organic aerosol.

PM2.5 characterization of primary and secondary organic aerosols in two urban-industrial areas in the East Mediterranean

Marc Fadel et al.

Summary: Organic aerosols in PM2.5 were analyzed in Zouk Mikael and Fiaa, Lebanon over a one-year period, showing higher concentrations of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) at Zouk Mikael than Fiaa, attributed to the presence of a power plant. Phthalates were identified for the first time in Lebanon with high concentrations at both sites. The study suggested strong anthropogenic influences on the aerosols in both locations, with different patterns observed between winter and summer seasons.

Summary: A study comparing two methods for analyzing functional groups in SOA found that both FTIR spectroscopy and derivatization-spectrophotometric methods are adequate for measuring the functional group composition of SOA. While the derivitization-spectrophotometric methods offer more specificity, they also require more time and aerosol mass for sample analysis than the FTIR methods. Functional group signatures obtained from SOA generated in environmental chambers can potentially be used to gain insight into oxidation and particle-phase reactions responsible for SOA formation in field samples.

Multigeneration Production of Secondary Organic Aerosol from Toluene Photooxidation

Yixin Li et al.

Summary: Photooxidation of toluene can lead to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC) through a complex series of chemical reactions, involving the production of dicarbonyls and carboxylic functional groups as primary precursors. The study shows that volatile dicarbonyls form nonvolatile oligomers and light-absorbing nitrogen heterocycles/heterochains at high humidity, while organic acids contribute to aerosol carboxylates through ionic dissociation or acid-base reactions over a wide range of humidity levels. These findings highlight the important role of toluene in SOA/BrC formation due to the unique functionalities of dicarbonyls and organic acids in aerosol-phase reactions.

Relative Humidity Changes the Role of SO2 in Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation

Li Xu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that high relative humidity enhances the contribution of SO2 to the formation of OSs, particularly HOOSs, during monoterpene ozonolysis in the atmosphere. The interaction between SO2 and ROOHs under high humidity conditions promotes the formation of HOOSs, leading to changes in SOA yield. Additionally, variations in particle acidity and liquid water content also impact SOA formation.

Study on the Formation of Secondary Organic Aerosol by Ozonolysis of Citral in the Atmosphere

Chenxi Zhang et al.

Summary: A major research area in atmospheric chemistry focuses on the formation mechanism of secondary organic aerosols, with recent studies showing that Criegee intermediates formed during the ozonolysis of citral can oxidize NO and SO2 to produce nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The reactions between these CIs and H2O or SO2 may play a crucial role in removing them from the atmosphere and determining their atmospheric concentrations. Furthermore, low-volatility organic compounds potentially arising from the ozonolysis of citral can form SOA through different processes.
