The importance of mineral ingredients in biochar production, properties and applications

K. Vijayaraghavan

Summary: The mineral ingredients in biochar play a crucial role in influencing its properties and applications, which has been highlighted in recent research. The mineral composition of biochar is impacted by factors such as feedstock type and pyrolysis parameters, ultimately affecting its pH, conductivity, surface area, and structure. These mineral ingredients are essential for biosorption of contaminants and enable biochar to be used in various applications beyond soil improvement.

Unraveling iron speciation on Fe-biochar with distinct arsenic removal mechanisms and depth distributions of As and Fe

Zibo Xu et al.

Summary: Customizing iron speciation in Fe-biochar is crucial for effective arsenic immobilization. Different iron speciations play distinct roles in As removal, with labile/amorphous-C inducing more reductive-Fe(0) formation leading to efficient As immobilization, while stable/graphitic-C generates more amorphous-Fe resulting in high As removal despite limited Fe(0) content. This study provides insights for the design of multifunctional Fe-biochar for environmental remediation.

Summary: This study investigated the remediation of soil contaminated by hexavalent chromium using a combination of natural clay mineral attapulgite and natural antioxidant tea polyphenols. The results showed that the green-tea impregnated attapulgite effectively reduced the Cr(VI) content in soil and promoted the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Additionally, it improved soil enzyme activities and environmental conditions, demonstrating its potential as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated soils.

Summary: This study compares the profitability and energy efficiency of two processes for producing metallic iron nanoparticles using hydrated hydrazine and sodium borohydride. The results show that the sodium borohydride-based process is more profitable and energy-efficient than the hydrazine-based one. Despite the hydrazine-based process producing high purity iron nanoparticles, the borohydride-based process has lower energy consumption and higher exergy efficiency.

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: Carbonaceous supports such as biochar play a critical role in enhancing the performance of nZVI for heavy metals removal, with a particular focus on their electrochemical properties in As(III) removal. Biochar-supported nZVI with varying surface areas exhibit higher oxidation rate and efficiency in removing As(III) compared to bare nZVI. The electron accepting capacity of biochar is found to be crucial in the oxidation and removal of As(III), with effects varying depending on pyrolysis temperature.

Efficacy of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in regulating growth performance, total glutathione and redox state of Calendula officinalis L. cultivated on Pb and Cd polluted soil

Summary: The study showed that foliar application of MWCNT at concentrations up to 250 mg L-1 can alleviate Pb and Cd-induced toxicity and enhance the phytoremediation properties of pot marigold plants. However, higher concentrations of MWCNTs at 500 and 1000 mg L-1 exacerbated oxidative damage and reduced the accumulation of Pb and Cd in pot marigold seedlings. The research highlights the potential of MWCNTs to assist in phytoremediation of heavy metal polluted soils but also raises concerns about the toxic effects of high concentrations on plant physiology.

Transformation of nanoscale zero-valent iron with antimony: Effects of the Sb spatial configuration

Tianhang Gu et al.

Summary: The spatial configuration of antimony complexes has a significant impact on the removal rate, with Sb(III) showing a higher reaction rate constant than Sb(V). The rate-limiting step is identified as Fe-O bond cleavage, with Sb(OH)3 favoring this process with lower energy barrier compared to Sb(OH)6. These findings suggest a new perspective on nZVI reactions with oxyanions like arsenic and selenium, highlighting the importance of complex spatial configurations in metal(loid) separation.
