Intracellular versus extracellular antibiotic resistance genes in the environment: Prevalence, horizontal transfer, and mitigation strategies

Ali Zarei-Baygi et al.

Summary: While iARGs are predominant in nutrient-rich environments, eARGs are more prevalent in aquatic environments. eARGs can be adsorbed by soil and sediment particles, protected from degradation, and therefore persist longer than iARGs. The characteristics of eARGs emphasize their crucial role in the spread of antibiotic resistance in the environment.

Chlorine disinfection facilitates natural transformation through ROS-mediated oxidative stress

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study shows that chloramine and free chlorine can significantly increase the transformation rate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through a series of cell responses, including increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), bacterial membrane and DNA damage, ultimately enhancing the transformation of ARGs. Disinfectant exposure induces a stress response in cells, leading to the promotion of ARGs transformation, which could play a crucial role in managing antibiotic resistance in water systems.

Effects of biofilm colonization on the sinking of microplastics in three freshwater environments

Lingzhan Miao et al.

Summary: Microplastics have been frequently found in freshwater environments, raising concerns about their ecological effects, particularly the impact of biofilms on freshwater ecosystems. The colonization of microbes on microplastics alters their transport behavior, with biofouled microplastics showing increased sinking tendencies compared to pristine ones. This highlights the importance of studying how biofouling affects the sinking and distribution of microplastics in freshwater environments.
