Simple and facile preparation of tunable chitosan tubular nanocomposite microspheres for fast uranium(VI) removal from seawater

Mudasir Ahmad et al.

Summary: This study developed a new adsorbent for efficient uranium(VI) adsorption from seawater, achieving a 99.5% adsorption efficiency. The adsorbent had NH2 and COOH content of approximately 0.61 mmol/g and 0.23 mmol/g, with an adsorption capacity of 0.660 (mg/g). Additionally, adsorption kinetics were influenced by the physical structure of the adsorbent and the proportion of FTn in the Cs-matrix, while the presence of coexisted ions did not affect uranium(VI) adsorption efficiency.

Covalent organic framework hydrogels for synergistic seawater desalination and uranium extraction

Wei-Rong Cui et al.

Summary: A covalent organic framework hydrogel, named CPP, is reported as a synergistic platform for seawater desalination and uranium extraction, showing exceptional evaporation rate and uranium extraction capacity. The hydrogel network and microporous channels of CPP provide adequate water transport, improve mass transfer of uranyl ions, and increase binding sites for uranyl ions. Additionally, CPP utilizes interfacial solar heating to limit heat, increase solar energy utilization, and accelerate coordination between uranium and binding sites, leading to high anti-biofouling activity and efficient solar desalination and uranium extraction. The connection between freshwater and nuclear energy is realized in this new material, providing an opportunity to meet the growing needs of mankind.
