Molecular mechanisms underlying the calcium-mediated uptake of hematite nanoparticles by the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila

Chao Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of calcium on the uptake of polyacrylate-coated hematite nanoparticles by the aquatic ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila at different calcium concentrations. The results showed that calcium can influence nanoparticle accumulation by inducing endocytosis and phagocytosis, rather than aggregation.

Perturbation of calcium homeostasis and multixenobiotic resistance by nanoplastics in the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila

Chao Wu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that PS-NPs induced toxicity in Tetrahymena thermophila mainly by perturbing calcium homeostasis and inhibiting the activity of multixenobiotic resistance transporter, leading to both direct and indirect effects on the organism.

Novel Imaging of Silver Nanoparticle Uptake by a Unicellular Alga and Trophic Transfer to Daphnia magna

Neng Yan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the internalization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in unicellular algae, with different surface coatings affecting the pathways for cellular entry. Furthermore, trophic transfer of AgNPs from algae to zooplankton species was visualized, revealing differences in retention and distribution patterns based on surface coatings.

Bacteria compete with hematite nanoparticles during their uptake by the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila

Wen-Bo Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that bacteria have an impact on the uptake of non-associated nanoparticles (NPs) in aquatic ecosystems, but their effects on the physiological activities of ciliates are minimal.
