Comprehensive coupled thermo-hydro-bio-mechanical model for holistic performance assessment of municipal solid waste landfills

Girish Kumar et al.

Summary: A comprehensive coupled thermo-hydro-bio-mechanical (CTHBM) model is proposed to simulate the interactions in municipal solid waste landfills and assess their influence on long-term performance. Numerical simulations were conducted to study the spatial and temporal variations of waste characteristics under different landfill conditions. The dynamic changes in waste properties also had an impact on the behavior of liner and cover system interfaces.

Influence of Waste Temperatures on Long-Term Landfill Performance: Coupled Numerical Modeling

Girish Kumar et al.

Summary: A coupled thermo-hydro-bio-mechanical numerical model was used to simulate the long-term behavior of municipal solid waste in landfills, showing that temperature has significant impact on characteristics such as moisture distribution, landfill gas production, settlement of waste, and temperatures in the landfill system.

Effects of Leachate Recirculation System Variables on Long-Term Bioreactor Landfill Performance Using Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Bio-mechanical Model

Girish Kumar et al.

Summary: This study applied a newly developed CTHBM numerical model to evaluate the impact of leachate injection pressure, horizontal spacing, and injection mode on the performance of bioreactor landfills. Results showed that higher injection pressure had the most significant effect, leading to increased wetted area but also larger elevated temperature zones and differential settlements. Larger horizontal spacing caused higher differential waste settlements, while increasing gaps between injection periods reduced elevated temperature zones. The shear displacements in geosynthetic interfaces were mainly influenced by the injection pressure.
