Virulence Traits and Population Genomics of the Black Yeast Aureobasidium melanogenum

Anja Cernosa et al.

Summary: The black yeast-like fungus Aureobasidium melanogenum is an opportunistic human pathogen commonly found indoors. This study found that the fungus can grow at 37 degrees Celsius, produce siderophores, and exhibit hemolytic activity. Different strains of the fungus showed significant variability in the assimilation of hydrocarbons and human neurotransmitters. Genomic analysis revealed a structured population with potential differences in virulence among phylogenetic lineages.
