Establishment of fetomaternal tolerance through glycan-mediated B cell suppression

G. Rizzuto et al.

Summary: The recognition and tolerance of the placenta by the maternal immune system is crucial for a healthy pregnancy. This study provides evidence that glycan-mediated B cell suppression plays a key role in establishing fetomaternal tolerance in mice. The release of trophoblast-derived sialoglycoproteins into the maternal circulation during pregnancy suggests potential implications for immune-mediated pregnancy complications and tumor immune evasion.

Pregnancy-induced humoral sensitization overrides T cell tolerance to fetus-matched allografts in mice

Ashley N. Suah et al.

Summary: Pregnancies induce T cell tolerance and humoral sensitization to semiallogeneic fetuses, impacting the rejection of offspring-matched allografts. In B cell-deficient mice, allogeneic pregnancies facilitate the acceptance of fetus-matched allografts. Antibodies induced by pregnancies may hinder transplantation tolerance.

NFAT-dependent and -independent exhaustion circuits program maternal CD8 T cell hypofunction in pregnancy

Emma L. Lewis et al.

Summary: Studies demonstrate that pregnancy induces exhausted CD8 T cells in mothers, prolonging allograft survival. Maternal CD8 T cells during pregnancy share exhaustion features with CD8 T cells from chronic infection and cancer.
