Effects of handling during experimental procedures on stress indices in the green shore crab, Carcinus maenas (L)

Charlotte H. Wilson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different handling procedures on the acute physiological responses of green shore crab, finding that oxygen consumption and hemolymph glucose and L-lactate concentrations were elevated post-handling. Differences between light and severe handling treatments showed that vibration was a major contributor to the stress response. Even gentle handling without physical touching and minimal visual and vibrational stimuli still evoked a stress response in crabs, supporting a recommendation for a settling time of at least 12 hours before experimental procedures are initiated.

Acclimation to tidal conditions alters the physiological responses of the green shore crab, Carcinus maenas, to subsequent emersion

Sarah J. Nancollas et al.

Summary: The study found that tidal crabs demonstrated better physiological adaptations during emersion compared to non-tidal crabs, with the former showing lower metabolic costs and maintaining aerobic metabolism. Tidal crabs also exhibited higher levels of haemocyanin, which may help them sustain oxygen transport and buffer pH changes during emersion.
