L. M. L. K. B. Lindamulla et al.

Summary: Membrane bioreactor technology integrates biological wastewater treatment and physical separation by membrane filtration. Mathematical models for membrane bioreactors have not adequately considered the impact of soluble microbial products on membrane fouling, but this study has integrated biological and physical models to address this issue. The developed integrated model considers the influence of soluble microbial products, extracellular polymeric substances, sludge removal, and membrane cleaning, enabling prediction of system performance and membrane fouling under various operating conditions.

Aged landfill leachate enhances anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Meng Gao et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a sustainable method for recovering energy from organic wastes, but the efficiency for waste activated sludge (WAS) is limited due to WAS hydrolysis constraints. This study proposes a strategy to treat WAS and landfill leachate simultaneously, aiming to enhance WAS hydrolysis and organic conversion to methane. The effects of landfill leachate on the different stages of AD of WAS were investigated, showing that appropriate amounts of leachate can promote solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidogenesis, but not methanogenesis. Mechanism studies revealed the beneficial effects of humic acid in leachate on hydrolysis and acidogenesis, and the dose-dependent effects of heavy metals on the AD process. Additionally, microbial community analysis showed an increase in microbes responsible for hydrolysis and acidogenesis with the presence of landfill leachate.

Beneficiation of saline effluents from seawater desalination plants: Fostering the zero liquid discharge (ZLD) approach - A techno-economic evaluation

Argyris Panagopoulos

Summary: Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) and utilizing saline effluents for resource recovery have attracted interest recently. A research study presented two different ZLD systems to utilize brine by recovering freshwater and solid salts with commercial value. The results showed that while system 2 had higher specific energy consumption and freshwater cost than system 1, it was more profitable due to increased revenue from pure NaCl production. Both systems were even profitable solely from selling freshwater, demonstrating their promising potential for sustainable brine management and utilization.

Seyede Raheleh Yousefi et al.

Summary: This study reported the sonochemical synthesis of DBNO NC and investigated its optical, electrical, magnetic, and photocatalytic properties. The effects of various factors on the photocatalytic activity were studied, showing that increasing the amount of catalyst and decreasing the dye concentration enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite. The degradation activity of AR14 was higher than that of AB92, and both dyes showed higher photocatalytic degradation under UV irradiation compared to visible light.
