Hydrochar and hydrochar co-compost from OFMSW digestate for soil application: 1. production and chemical characterization

Donato Scrinzi et al.

Summary: This research explores a new industrial model for managing organic solid waste, using anaerobic digestion and subsequent composting, with the addition of hydrothermal carbonization as a post-treatment process. The findings show that the hydrochars and hydrochar co-composts produced are suitable for agro-industrial applications, and the hydrothermal carbonization liquors can be used in biochemical methane potential tests for methane production. These new approaches can enhance plant capacity and increase biogas production. Additionally, the study describes the agro-environmental properties of hydrochars and hydrochar co-composts, highlighting the beneficial effect of composting on reducing phytotoxicity of hydrochars.

Leachate and contact test withLepidium sativumL. to assess the phytotoxicity of waste

M. Bozym et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the phytotoxicity of hazardous and nonhazardous waste using Lepidium sativum L. The results showed that mineral-organic composite stimulated plant growth, copper smelter slag had no phytotoxicity, and zinc slag inhibited plant growth. The contact test was found to be more sensitive for assessing phytotoxicity compared to the leachate test.

Summary: The study showed that microbial aging modified the molecular characteristics of hydrochars-based DOM by reducing DOM release, increasing molecular diversity, producing more biodegradable compounds, and reducing aromaticity. Additionally, microbial aging promoted the degradation of phenols, phenolic acids, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in hydrochar-based DOM.

Dose-response analysis of diesel fuel phytotoxicity on selected plant species

Michael O. Eze et al.

Summary: Bioassays were conducted on 15 plant species to determine their tolerance to diesel fuel toxicity. Results showed that increasing diesel fuel concentrations generally led to a decrease in biomass in 13 species, while Medicago sativa exhibited a significant hormetic influence. The study highlights the importance of considering hormesis in plant toxicology research.

The roles of co-composted biochar (COMBI) in improving soil quality, crop productivity, and toxic metal amelioration

Joao A. Antonangelo et al.

Summary: The use of co-composted biochar (COMBI) in agriculture, where biochar is added at the beginning of the composting process, has increased significantly over the past decade, offering more benefits compared to using compost and biochar separately or mixed together. Despite limited research, there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate the importance of producing such products to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental safety. The quality of both biochar and compost is greatly improved during co-composting, leading to enhanced soil health and crop yields.

Phytotoxicity of hydrochars obtained by hydrothermal carbonization of manure-based digestate

Silvia Celletti et al.

Summary: The management of digestate from anaerobic digestion is a serious environmental issue due to potential negative impacts. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is considered a sustainable alternative for digestate management, with hydrochar proposed as a growing medium in soilless culture systems. Further investigations into the eco-sustainable potential of AD-HTC coupling are necessary for biomass, green economy, and waste conversion.

Changes in the Bio-Availability of Phosphorus in Pyrochars and Hydrochars Derived from Sewage Sludge after Their Amendment to Soils

Marina Paneque et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrochars and pyrochars derived from sewage sludge can be used as effective phosphorus fertilizers in soil. The higher Olsen-P content in pyrochars and hydrochars confirms their potential as phosphorus fertilizers. The involvement of biological and biochemical processes in the transformation of immobilized phosphorus is a key factor in determining the efficiency of organic amendments as phosphorus fertilizers.

Effect of residence time during hydrothermal carbonization of biogas digestate on the combustion characteristics of hydrochar and the biogas production of process water

Zebin Cao et al.

Summary: The study shows that HTC treatment of biogas digestate can improve the slagging and fouling indices of hydrochar, with the specific methane yield of process water minimally affected by varying HTC residence time. Energy assessment reveals that HTC for 0.5 hours achieves the highest process efficiency and net energy gain, suggesting the use of 210 degrees C, 0.5 hours HTC condition for energy production.
