How to enhance the purification performance of traditional floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) at low temperatures: Strengthening strategies

Mathieu Nsenga Kumwimba et al.

Summary: Enhanced floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) show variable nutrient removal efficiencies in improving eutrophic water in low-temperature conditions, but face challenges in the sustainability and sufficiency of water purification efficiency. Current amendments can enhance the purification performance of FTWs to some extent, while future research should focus on optimizing FTW components, promoting synergistic enhancement of macrophytes, benthos, and microorganisms, as well as integrating multiple strategies and rational design and operational approaches to address these challenges.

Treatment of microcystin (MC-LR) and nutrients in eutrophic water by constructed wetlands: Performance and microbial community

Rui Cheng et al.

Summary: The presence of plants can generally enhance nutrients and microcystins (MCs) removal efficiency in constructed wetlands (CWs), with ceramisite and iron-carbon being more suitable substrates for nutrient and MC-LR removal. The study provides a theoretical basis for practical application of CWs in eutrophication and MCs pollution control.

Removal of sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline in constructed wetlands integrated with microbial fuel cells influenced by influent and operational conditions

Huiyang Wen et al.

Summary: This study found that glucose outperformed other carbon sources in MFC-CWs, with moderate concentration (200 mg L-1) resulting in the best removal of SMX and TC. The highest removal percentages of SMX and TC were obtained in MFC-CWs with an external resistance of 700 Omega. Aeration for 12 hours was shown to improve the removal efficiency of antibiotics in MFC-CWs.

Distribution of microcystins in environmental multimedia and their bioaccumulation characteristics in marine benthic organisms in the Geum River Estuary, South Korea

Mungi Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatio-temporal distributions and bioaccumulation characteristics of freshwater cyanobacterial toxins, such as microcystins (MCs), in the Geum River Estuary of South Korea during summer. Seasonal variation in phytoplankton communities and strong correlations between MC concentrations and water temperature, chlorophyll a, and cyanobacterial density were observed. Dissolved MCs remained longer and were more widely distributed in coastal environments compared to particulate MCs, with the phase shift of MCs occurring in the estuary. Overall, the study enhances understanding of the distribution, transport, fate, and bioaccumulation of MCs in estuarine and coastal environments.

Summary: The global energy crisis has led to the development of green energy technologies like microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for wastewater treatment and bioenergy generation. Factors affecting energy production are discussed to optimize MFC processes, including design and operational conditions. However, challenges still remain in balancing harvesting efficiency and upscaling MFC systems.
