Sewage sludge, digestate, and mineral fertilizer application affects the yield and energy balance of Amur silvergrass

Bogdan Dubis et al.

Summary: The application of sewage sludge and digestate as fertilizers can increase biomass yields of Amur silvergrass while decreasing energy inputs in production. Digestate and sewage sludge show comparable effects to mineral fertilizers on biomass yield, with organic wastes resulting in a significant reduction in energy inputs. Nitrogen fertilization decreases energy efficiency, with digestate showing the highest energy efficiency compared to sewage sludge and mineral fertilizers.

Prospects of Bioenergy Production From Organic Waste Using Anaerobic Digestion Technology: A Mini Review

M. N. Uddin et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion from organic waste is gaining attention globally for its environmental and economic benefits, including reducing waste, conserving resources, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Utilizing waste as a renewable energy source can help decarbonize the economy and reduce harmful pollutants. Effective AD processes require consideration of factors such as temperature, pH, strong inoculum to substrate ratio, good mixing, and small particle sizes.

Wastewater treatment decentralization: Is this the right direction for megacities in the Global South?

Andre Torre et al.

Summary: The balance between centralization and decentralization in wastewater treatment management in urban environments has been a recurring topic of discussion. It is necessary to consider a wide range of parameters to determine the optimal management level and avoid falling into the trap of dichotomous thinking. Actions should be taken to upgrade wastewater treatment systems while taking into account economic, social, and environmental constraints.

Assessing the environmental sustainability corridor: Linking natural resources, renewable energy, human capital, and ecological footprint in BRICS.

Solomon Prince Nathaniel et al.

Summary: The study reveals that economic growth and natural resource increase contribute to ecological footprint (EF), while renewable energy decreases it. Human capital is not yet at a desirable level to mitigate environmental deterioration. Country-specific results show the deteriorating impact of economic growth and the abating role of renewable energy on the environment. Further findings suggest a feedback causality between human capital, urbanization, and EF.
