Effects of supplemental source of magnesium and inclusion of buffer on ruminal microbial fermentation in continuous culture

J. A. Arce-Cordero et al.

Summary: In this study, we evaluated the effect of different sources of magnesium on ruminal fermentation, finding that the source did not significantly impact fermentation variables, but soluble magnesium concentration was higher for MgO compared to BLN. Buffer supplementation increased ruminal pH, acetate and branched-chain VFA proportions, and NDF digestibility, with interactions observed for propionate, butyrate, and NH3-N based on magnesium source. These results suggest that both MgO and BLN can promote similar ruminal fermentation at a concentration of 0.25% Mg, but buffer supplementation can have varying effects based on the magnesium source used.

Conditions stimulating neutral detergent fiber degradation by dosing branched-chain volatile fatty acids. I: Comparison with branched-chain amino acids and forage source in ruminal batch cultures

Y. Roman-Garcia et al.

Summary: The study conducted three experiments to evaluate the impact of branched-chain volatile fatty acids (BCVFA) on neutral detergent fiber (NDF) disappearance in ruminal fluid-derived batch cultures enriched with particulate-phase bacteria. The results showed that substituting BCVFA for BCAA can increase NDF digestibility, especially when using grass hay. Overall, grass hay was more responsive to BCVFA stimulation than alfalfa hay, likely due to higher degradable protein content in the former.

Dual-flow continuous culture fermentor system updated to decrease variance of estimates of digestibility of neutral detergent fiber

Summary: The study compared the newly modified DFCC fermentors with the original units and found that the modifications primarily improved the reliability of fiber digestibility, though more work may be needed to reduce variance in concentration-based fermentation parameters.
