Habitual dietary intake of IBD patients differs from population controls: a case-control study

Vera Peters et al.

Summary: Evidence-based dietary guidelines are lacking for IBD patients, leading to potential nutritional deficiencies and disease course implications. The study compared dietary intake of IBD patients with controls, finding differences in food groups consumed by patients in remission and with active disease as compared to controls. Special attention to protein intake is needed for the treatment of these patients.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status and sarcopenia in patients with IBD in clinical remission. The findings revealed a considerable proportion of patients to be malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, along with a high rate of sarcopenia.

Summary: In Crohn's disease patients, sarcopenia and visceral fat have significant impact on predicting surgery and disease outcomes. The combination of these parameters has a more detrimental effect on patient outcomes.

Summary: The efficacy and safety of tofacitinib in treating UC are similar regardless of patients' baseline BMI. Patients in different BMI subgroups showed similar clinical response and efficacy outcomes. However, patients in the BMI >= 30 subgroup may have a higher risk of serious infections.
