Nonlinear definition of the shadowy mode in higher-order scalar-tensor theories

Antonio De Felice et al.

Summary: The study focuses on U-DHOST theories, specifically examining the extra mode that arises in a generic coordinate system. The analysis reveals that this extra mode does not propagate, satisfying a three-dimensional elliptic differential equation on a spacelike hypersurface. The study also delves into how to handle this mysterious mode at both linear and nonlinear levels.

Spectrum of Cuscuton bounce

J. Leo Kim et al.

Summary: The study explores the cosmological bounce model based on Cuscuton gravity and finds that scale-invariant entropy modes can be generated when the auxiliary field is kinetically coupled to the primary field. The Cuscuton bounce solution is free of singularities and does not require ad hoc matching conditions. Furthermore, the study shows that while tensor modes in Cuscuton bounce are stable, the produced spectrum is strongly blue and not observable.

Distinguishing modified gravity with just two tensorial degrees of freedom from general relativity: Black holes, cosmology, and matter coupling

Aya Iyonaga et al.

Summary: We studied spatially covariant modified gravity where the scalar degree of freedom is rendered non-dynamical, resulting in two tensorial degrees of freedom, equivalent to general relativity. Analysis is done on how modified gravity theories with two tensorial degrees of freedom can be distinguished from general relativity observationally. The study confirms that this modified gravity theory predictions match general relativity for key parameters and does not affect asymptotically flat black holes. Additionally, by manipulating time-dependent functions, the cosmological dynamics can be made similar to the ΛCDM model.

Spatially covariant gravity with a dynamic lapse function

Jiong Lin et al.

Summary: In the framework of spatially covariant gravity, the extension of a gravitational theory with two physical degrees of freedom (DoF) is studied by putting the lapse function N and the spatial metric h(ij) on an equal footing. Two sufficient and necessary conditions for ensuring these two DoF are identified through Hamiltonian analysis. Different cases with coupling functions dependent on N or spatial derivatives of N are explored, revealing the possibility of wave solutions and the recovery of general relativity (GR) in certain scenarios. Additionally, a disformal transformation is shown to lead to a class of quadratic actions with two DoF that can be derived from GR.

Minimally modified gravity with an auxiliary constraint: A Hamiltonian construction

Zhi-Bang Yao et al.

Summary: By working directly with a general Hamiltonian for the spacetime metric and introducing an auxiliary constraint, it is possible to reduce the number of degrees of freedom. The new construction of theories propagate two tensorial degrees of freedom and differ from general relativity in their properties. The formalism is illustrated with a concrete example and the dispersion relation for gravitational waves is derived for potential observational constraints.
