The subsurface urban heat island in Milan (Italy)-A modeling approach covering present and future thermal effects on groundwater regimes

Alberto Previati et al.

Summary: The study introduces a holistic city-scale 3D FEM model to investigate potential thermal management applications in the Milan metropolitan area, focusing on the formation of subsurface urban heat islands and the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors. Through simulation analysis, the study reveals the heat sources and geothermal potential of the urban subsurface.

Thermal influences on groundwater in urban environments-A multivariate statistical analysis of the subsurface heat island effect in Munich

Fabian Boettcher et al.

Summary: This study identifies the influences of anthropogenic and natural factors on groundwater temperature in cities, with natural factors having a greater impact at greater depths, while anthropogenic factors decrease. Mitigating future groundwater warming requires minimizing surface sealing and restoring permeability in heavily sealed areas.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Different Layers of Soil and Groundwater - Evaluation of Levels of Pollution and Sources of Contamination

Predrag Ilic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater at a former cellulose factory in Banja Luka, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The results showed that the concentrations of PAHs decreased with depth in soil, indicating heavy contamination at the industrial site that may require remediation. Factor analysis identified three main sources of contamination, providing important data for PAH remediation.

Emerging organic compounds in European groundwater

S. Y. Bunting et al.

Summary: The emergence of organic compounds in European groundwater is a growing area of research. Despite the formalisation of a voluntary groundwater watch list, there has been no systematic review of groundwater occurrence data in Europe. The aim in Europe is to develop a unified strategy for the classification and prioritisation of organic compounds to be monitored in groundwater.

Emerging organic contaminants in groundwater under a rapidly developing city (Patna) in northern India dominated by high concentrations of lifestyle chemicals

Laura A. Richards et al.

Summary: This study characterized the distribution of groundwater EOCs near Patna, a rapidly developing city in India, with urban inputs and local pollution hot spots contributing to peak concentrations. Additionally, active microbial degradation processes were observed in groundwater, indicating coexistence of limited transformation products with parent compounds.

Four scenarios of environmental risk of diclofenac in European groundwater ecosystems

T. Di Lorenzo et al.

Summary: Groundwater is the largest source of liquid freshwater on Earth, with diverse ecosystems that provide important ecological services. Pharmaceutical compounds such as diclofenac pose different environmental risks in European groundwater, with varying risk expectations based on different assessment scenarios.

Groundwater quality changes in peri-urban areas of the Walloon region of Belgium

Julie Gesels et al.

Summary: An extensive survey was conducted in the Walloon Region of Belgium to assess groundwater quality in peri-urban and industrial contexts. Results showed that the composition of groundwater is altered in these areas with increased concentrations of several organic pollutants and most inorganic trace elements. The influence of lithology was also observed in the dataset, indicating significant changes in environmental conditions.

Ecophysiological responses of two closely related epigean and hypogean Niphargus species to hypoxia and increased temperature: Do they differ?

Tatjana Simcic et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of exposure to hypoxia, followed by reoxygenation, and increased temperature on oxygen consumption, potential metabolic activity, and antioxidant activities in closely related epigean and hypogean Niphargus species. Results showed differences in respiratory and antioxidant responses between the two species, indicating potential adaptations to different environmental conditions. Hypogean species exhibited characteristics suitable for temperature stable subterranean environments, while epigean species were more adapted to specific surface habitats.

Side Effects of Pesticides and Metabolites in Groundwater: Impact on Denitrification

Caroline Michel et al.

Summary: The study showed that the metabolite ESA-metolachlor had a significant inhibitory effect on denitrification, while propiconazole and 1,2,4-triazole had a smaller impact. Pesticides affected the nitrate reduction process but did not significantly alter the abundance of nitrate reductase genes. Overall, pesticides and metabolites at environmental concentrations can have side effects on microbial denitrification and potentially impact ecosystem services.

Summary: Global concerns have been raised regarding microplastic (MP) pollution in recent decades, with existing studies mainly focusing on marine, freshwater, and sediment systems. Research attention on MP pollution in soils and groundwater is comparatively lower. This review systematically outlines the characteristics, analytical methods, and impacts of MPs in soils and groundwater, identifying knowledge gaps and suggesting future research directions.

Sensitivity of a widespread groundwater copepod to different contaminants

Andrea Castano-Sanchez et al.

Summary: Groundwater is a crucial resource for humans and ecosystems, but the response of groundwater organisms to stress factors is not well understood. By testing the sensitivity of a copepod species from groundwater to different compounds, it was found that copper sulfate was the most toxic, while sodium chloride was the least toxic. The results suggest that the groundwater populations of certain species may be a good indicator for assessing the ecological effects of contaminants in groundwater ecosystems.

The impact of nitrate on the groundwater assemblages of European unconsolidated aquifers is likely less severe than expected

Tiziana Di Lorenzo et al.

Summary: The study found that despite long-term exposure to high concentrations of nitrates, the copepod assemblages in the unconsolidated aquifer showed high diversity, with species richness exceeding the European average but species density below it. Juvenile copepods were less abundant than adults, and the biomass-abundance model indicated signs of alterations in the copepod assemblage structure.
