Superhydrophobic versus SLIPS: Temperature dependence and the stability of ice adhesion strength

Ludmila B. Boinovich et al.

Summary: The study focuses on ice adhesion to superhydrophobic and slippery surfaces using a new centrifugal method with precise temperature control. The developed method allows for monitoring ice detachment from multiple samples and accurately measuring the rotation frequency for each detachment in one experiment.

Fabrication and durability characterization of superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused surfaces

Ryan Stoddard et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the durability of non-wetting surfaces, identifying functionalizing agents and lubricants that showed high durability under different conditions. The results also revealed a close correlation between lubricant viscosity and durability in hydrodynamic conditions.

Assessing the Risks of Vessel Icing and Aviation Hazards during Downslope Windstorms in the Russian Arctic

Anna A. Shestakova

Summary: The study shows that the frequency of ship icing is highest downstream from Svalbard and Novaya Zemlya during downslope windstorms, while Tiksi and Wrangel Island experience rare icing due to sea ice cover in the cold season. Heavy icing is relatively frequent during Novaya Zemlya downslope windstorms and less frequent during Svalbard windstorms. Additionally, strong aviation turbulence is observed at altitudes of 1 to 4 km above the surface in all regions, with hazardous turbulence for jet aircraft found on Svalbard and in Tiksi region during strong downslope windstorms.

A Review on the Current Status of Icing Physics and Mitigation in Aviation

Masafumi Yamazaki et al.

Summary: Icing on aircraft is a complex issue with ongoing research into both icing physics and mitigation techniques. Recent studies focus on engine icing and the development of passive mitigation techniques such as chemical coatings, along with active methods like thermal and mechanical solutions. The hybrid approach, combining active and passive techniques, shows promise in reducing energy consumption.
