Coronavirus disease 2019 in patients with inborn errors of immunity: An international study

Isabelle Meyts et al.

Summary: The study shows that patients with IEI exhibit varied responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection, with some requiring hospitalization and even intensive care, and a non-negligible mortality rate. In comparison to the general population, younger IEI patients may face a higher risk of severe illness and mortality.

Safety and immunogenicity of an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, BBIBP-CorV: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 1/2 trial

Shengli Xia et al.

Summary: The inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, BBIBP-CorV, demonstrated safety and immunogenicity in two age groups. Humoral responses against SARS-CoV-2 were induced in all vaccine recipients by day 42. A two-dose immunisation with 4 mu g vaccine on days 0 and 21 or days 0 and 28 achieved higher neutralising antibody titres compared to other dosing schedules.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell epitopes were identified in convalescent and unexposed individuals, showing cross-reactivity with common cold coronaviruses. The diversity of SARS-CoV-2 T cell responses may be associated with mild symptoms of COVID-19.

PD-1-Expressing SARS-CoV-2-Specific CD8+ T Cells Are Not Exhausted, but Functional in Patients with COVID-19

Min-Seok Rha et al.

Summary: Memory T cell responses have been observed in COVID-19 convalescents, with specific T cells showing different phenotypes during the recovery phase. SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8(+) T cells displayed early differentiated effector-memory phenotypes in the early convalescent phase and an increased proportion of stem-like memory cells in the late convalescent phase. Compared to influenza A virus-specific CD8(+) T cells, SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8(+) T cells had a lower frequency of IFN-gamma-producing cells. Additionally, PD-1-expressing SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8(+) T cells were functional rather than exhausted.

SARS-CoV-2-Associated T-Cell Responses in the Presence of Humoral Immunodeficiency

Sudhir Gupta et al.

Summary: The study examined subsets of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, B cells, and regulatory lymphocytes in an immunocompetent patient and a CVID patient, revealing different patterns of abnormalities. The immunocompetent patient showed greater changes in various subsets compared to the CVID patient, indicating different immunological responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

T Cells: Warriors of SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Paola de Candia et al.

Summary: Severe infection with SARS-CoV-2 is characterized by massive cytokine release and T cell loss. The exaggerated host immune response, possibly dependent on T cell immunological memory, may significantly contribute to immunopathology and massive collateral damage in COVID-19 patients, especially in adults compared with children.

SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Induced Atypical Immune Responses in Antibody Defects: Everybody Does their Best

Ane Fernandez Salinas et al.

Summary: After BNT162b2 vaccination, some patients with primary antibody deficiencies exhibited atypical immune responses, possibly due to extra-follicular reactions or incomplete germinal center reactions. It remains unknown whether these responses to the vaccine might provide partial protection from infection or reinfection.

Minor Clinical Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Patients With Primary Immunodeficiency in Israel

Nufar Marcus et al.

Summary: The study summarized clinical and laboratory data of PID patients with COVID-19 in Israel, most of whom had mild symptoms, possibly due to their high level of awareness, extra precautions, and even self-isolation. Defects or abnormalities in specific immune pathways, such as type I interferon signaling, might increase the risk of a more severe disease course and the development of COVID-19 sequelae.

Robust Antibody and T Cell Responses to SARS-CoV-2 in Patients with Antibody Deficiency

Hannah Kinoshita et al.

Summary: This study characterized antibody and T cell responses to SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins in patients with antibody deficiencies, showing robust T cell activity and humoral immunity in some patients. The study results are encouraging, especially considering the reliance on spike protein in most candidate vaccines, but further research is needed to define the timing of immunity onset, longevity of immune response, and variability in immunocompromised patients.

Antibody Responses in COVID-19: A Review

Mateo Chvatal-Medina et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread as a severe pandemic, with variable seroprevalence rates worldwide and higher rates among health workers. The cross-neutralizing response between SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 is controversial, and the use of convalescent plasma has shown uncertain results. Cellular immunity plays a crucial role in resolving the infection.

CD8+ T cells contribute to survival in patients with COVID-19 and hematologic cancer

Erin M. Bange et al.

Summary: In patients with cancer and COVID-19, those with hematologic cancer show impaired immune responses compared to solid cancer patients. CD8 T cells play a crucial role in survival, even in the presence of limited humoral responses. The presence of SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell responses in hematologic cancer patients suggests a potential therapeutic target.
