HDL Particle Subspecies and Their Association With Incident Type 2 Diabetes: The PREVEND Study

Sara Sokooti et al.

Summary: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles of larger size and lower levels of H4P are associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D), while higher levels of H2P are associated with a higher risk. Additionally, large HDL particles and H6P are inversely associated with T2D in nonobese individuals.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Derived Biomarkers for Evaluating Cardiometabolic Risk in Youth and Young Adults Across the Spectrum of Glucose Tolerance

Stephanie T. Chung et al.

Summary: This study compared the levels of four biomarkers in youth and found that they were closely related to obesity and glycemia, with LPIR and GlycA being significantly elevated in youth with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, while glycine was decreased in youth with type 2 diabetes. These markers were correlated with HOMA-IR and HbA1c.

Long-term Predictions of Incident Coronary Artery Calcium to 85 Years of Age for Asymptomatic Individuals With and Without Type 2 Diabetes

Bart S. Ferket et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with type 2 diabetes are more likely to develop coronary artery calcium at a younger age than those without diabetes, and the risk of CAC increases with longer duration of diabetes treatment. Factors such as male sex, White ethnicity/race, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, and low serum creatinine are also associated with increased risk of CAC.

HDL and type 2 diabetes: the chicken or the egg?

Eva Xepapadaki et al.

Summary: The level of HDL-C and the functionality of HDL particles are correlated with the pathogenesis and prognosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. High blood sugar leads to reduced levels of HDL-C and worsened HDL functionality, through various changes in the proteome and lipidome of HDL particles. Decreased levels of HDL-C and impaired HDL functionality impact the performance of key organs related to glucose homeostasis, such as the pancreas and skeletal muscles.

Long-Term Complications in Youth-Onset Type 2 Diabetes

Petter Bjornstad et al.

Summary: Youth-onset type 2 diabetes patients are at increasing risk of complications over time, with most developing complications by young adulthood. Complications were more common among participants of minority race and ethnic group and those with hyperglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.
