Muscle Performance during the Menstrual Cycle Correlates with Psychological Well-Being, but Not Fluctuations in Sex Hormones

Tine Vrist Dam et al.

Summary: Variations in strength and power performance were observed during the menstrual cycle and the pill cycle in women. These variations were associated with lower psychological well-being, but not sex hormone fluctuations.

Bone metabolic marker concentrations across the menstrual cycle and phases of combined oral contraceptive use

Dan Martin et al.

Summary: This study found that bone marker concentrations do not significantly fluctuate across the menstrual cycle, while markers of bone resorption are significantly affected by the phase of COC use. However, markers of bone formation do not significantly vary by COC phase. This suggests that phase of COC use should be considered in clinical practice and research when assessing markers of bone metabolism.

Sex differences and considerations for female specific nutritional strategies: a narrative review

Kealey J. Wohlgemuth et al.

Summary: Although much of the information on nutrition and exercise performance is based on male needs, it is increasingly important to consider sex-specific nutritional needs for active females. Fluctuations in female hormonal levels throughout the menstrual cycle and lifecycle require more attention for effective nutritional considerations. There is currently a lack of specific nutritional recommendations for active females and female athletes.
