Antiviral drug Umifenovir (Arbidol) in municipal wastewater during the COVID-19 pandemic: Estimated levels and transformation

Nikolay Ul'yanovskii et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the transformation processes of umifenovir in municipal wastewater and its accumulation in natural reservoirs under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results showed that only about 40% of umifenovir was removed during biological wastewater treatment, leading to significant accumulation in biological sludge and bottom sediments and posing a risk of future secondary pollution in the environment.

Intrinsic mechanisms of calcium sulfite activation by siderite for atrazine degradation

Gen Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation performance of atrazine using siderite/sulfite process with CaSO3 as a replacement for Na2SO3 was evaluated. The siderite/CaSO3 system showed better effectiveness in atrazine degradation compared to the siderite/Na2SO3 system due to the low solubility of CaSO3. Increasing siderite concentration slightly increased the degradation rate constant for atrazine, while increasing CaSO3 dosage greatly decreased the degradation rate constant.

Predicted occurrence, ecotoxicological risk and environmentally acquired resistance of antiviral drugs associated with COVID-19 in environmental waters

Keisuke Kuroda et al.

Summary: Antiviral drugs used for treating COVID-19 patients can pose potential ecotoxicological risks in aquatic environments. Efforts are needed to improve the management and treatment of drug residues in wastewater to mitigate environmental impacts. While certain drugs may pose high risks to aquatic organisms, the likelihood of wild animals developing drug resistance is estimated to be low.
