Understanding the role of unzipped carbon nanotubes in cement pastes

Dong Lu et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) are commonly used carbon-based materials for modifying cementitious materials. This study discovered that unzipped carbon nanotubes (UCNTs) can significantly enhance the compressive and flexural strengths of cement paste, outperforming CNTs and GO. The outstanding reinforcement efficiency of UCNTs is attributed to their abundant surface chemistry similar to GO, as well as their one-dimensionality and bending stiffness similar to pristine CNTs.

The effects of graphene oxide-silica nanohybrids on the workability, hydration, and mechanical properties of Portland cement paste

Roozbeh Mowlaei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that increasing the thickness of silica coating on graphene oxide nanohybrids reduces the workability of cement paste but enhances its mechanical properties. The addition of GOS leads to an increase in compressive strength of cement paste, with the increase being proportional to the thickness of the coating.

Reactivity in cement pastes bearing fine fraction concrete and glass from construction and demolition waste: Microstructural analysis of viability

Summary: The study found that the reactivity of CDW blended with cement is similar to traditional cement, and the primary hydration products are also the same. These findings confirm the scientific feasibility of recycling such CDWs as mineral additions in eco-cement manufacture, eliminating the need to stockpile these materials at recycling/storage plants.

Using graphene oxide to improve physical property and control ASR expansion of cement mortar

Jianlin Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that the optimal sonication energy in water is 15 kJ for the dispersion of 300 mL pristine GO-water suspension with 0.04% wGO; GO has a remarkable effect on improving the flexural and compressive strength of GOPM, with a maximal increase of 24.16% and 43.03% compared to the baseline, respectively; GO has a significant influence on long-term anti-permeability and controlling expansion, with the expansion rate of GOPM well below the 0.1% threshold due to the nano-nucleation and interlocking effect of GO.

Experimental and Thermodynamic Study of Alkali-Activated Waste Glass and Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement Blends: Shrinkage, Efflorescence Potential, and Phase Assemblages

Rui Xiao et al.

Summary: The study explored the use of calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) to improve the strength and durability of alkali-activated waste glass powder, with successful results up to 50% CSA substitution. Higher CSA replacements altered reaction paths and decreased porosity, while also reducing shrinkage and leaching of free alkali.

Cementless controlled low-strength material (CLSM) based on waste glass powder and hydrated lime: Synthesis, characterization and thermodynamic simulation

Rui Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the production of cement-free controlled low strength material (CLSM) using waste glass powder and hydrated lime. The results show that a high GP/CH ratio enhances the workability and self-compacting behavior of the mixtures. Different GP/CH ratios change the phase assemblages of the reaction products, with an optimal ratio of 8:2 leading to the best material properties. Additionally, the formation of precipitated calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gels significantly improves the mechanical properties and durability of the CLSM.
