Characterizing the long-term occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their driving forces in surface waters

Ruifei Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed a decreasing trend in PAH concentrations, with seasonal periodic oscillations and higher pollution levels in winter. Vehicular emissions and coal combustion were identified as the main sources contributing to PAH concentrations and associated health risks, while the risks were determined to be low. Substitution of petroleum and coal with cleaner energy sources could help mitigate the impact of PAHs.

Evaluating the runoff storage supply-demand structure of green infrastructure for urban flood management

Chunlin Li et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has reduced green infrastructure and increased urban flood risks. A study evaluating the runoff storage supply-demand structure in Shenyang found limited and fragmented runoff storage supply in the city center, with significantly higher demand compared to suburban areas. As rainfall increases, the supply decreases and demand rises, challenging the balance between supply and demand.

Summary: The study found that increasing the length of ADP and rainfall intensity can improve LID performance, but model uncertainty has a greater impact on water quality performance; LID performance is heterogeneously distributed in space and is influenced by ADP length and rainfall intensity.

Assessing the performance of gray and green strategies for sustainable urban drainage system development: A multi-criteria decision-making analysis

Wenyu Yang et al.

Summary: The study proposed a comprehensive assessment framework for sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) performance, utilizing a combination of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) analysis and mathematical quantification. By implementing gray and green infrastructure strategies, the study found that the combined strategy showed the best overall performance in terms of sustainability.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic bibliometric review of optimization and resilience in LID stormwater management practices over a 17-year period. Four main research clusters were identified, each representing a research theme, along with cross-cutting research gaps. Climate change and resilience were identified as key hot topics, highlighting directions for future research in this emerging field.

Economic damages from Hurricane Sandy attributable to sea level rise caused by anthropogenic climate change

Benjamin H. Strauss et al.

Summary: The study found that part of the damages from Hurricane Sandy were attributable to climate-mediated anthropogenic sea level rise, adding an estimated $8.1 billion in damages and impacting an additional 71,000 people. This approach can be applied to other coastal storms for impact assessments in the future.

Developing an urban runoff management model by using satellite precipitation datasets to allocate low impact development systems under climate change conditions

Arman Oliazadeh et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of climate change on hydrological conditions and runoff management for low-impact development systems in Tehran. The results show increased intensity in 25-year storms and decreased annual precipitation. By selecting and optimizing LID options, runoff production was reduced and construction/maintenance costs were minimized. Despite increased costs under climate change conditions, significant floodwater volume changes were prevented.

Future global urban water scarcity and potential solutions

Chunyang He et al.

Summary: Urbanization and climate change are exacerbating global urban water scarcity, with the number of people affected projected to increase significantly by 2050, particularly in countries like India. Large cities and megacities will be most severely affected, and while infrastructure investment can help alleviate water scarcity, potential environmental trade-offs must be carefully considered.
