Structurally rigidified cobalt bis(dicarbollide) derivatives, a chiral platform for labelling of biomolecules and new materials

Suzan El Anwar et al.

Summary: In this study, we have reported a difunctional modification method for anionic cobalta bis(dicarbollide)(1(-)) clusters by introducing a B(8,8')-oxygen bridging unit and organic alkylazide substituents on the carbon atoms of the metallacarborane cage, which enhances their structural rigidity. These ions show good binding motifs for incorporation into organic molecules through Huisgen-Sharpless (2+3) cycloaddition reactions, and can be separated into enantiomers using chiral stationary phases. The electrochemical testing results indicate that these compounds exhibit high peaks located outside the typical signals of biomolecules.

Cobalt Bis(dicarbollide) Alkylsulfonamides: Potent and Highly Selective Inhibitors of Tumor Specific Carbonic Anhydrase IX

Bohumir Gruner et al.

Summary: A series of derivatives based on cobalt bis(dicarbollide)(1-) anion were reported, which can inhibit CAIX with subnanomolar inhibition constants and high selectivity. The compound with n=3 and two substituents in a rac-arrangement showed the best inhibitory properties. X-ray crystallography was used to study the interactions of these compounds with the active site of CAIX on the structural level.

The first chiral HPLC separation of dicarba-nido-undecarborate anions and their chromatographic behavior

Ondrej Horacek et al.

Summary: The chiral separations of stable anionic boron cluster derivatives with asymmetric substitutions remain a challenge in chiral chromatography, but this study successfully achieved the first-ever HPLC enantioseparations of 7,8-dicarba-nido-undecaborates(1-) by blocking cationic sites on the stationary phase. Brominated beta-cyclodextrin showed better chiral selectivity for separation of these species, providing new insights into chiral separation of anionic boron clusters.

Metallacarborane Derivatives Effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Yersinia enterocolitica

Wieslaw Swietnicki et al.

Summary: Novel compounds based on metallacarborane cage showed antibacterial activity against Yersinia pestis substitute Yersinia enterocolitica and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, indicating a common mechanism for drug resistance in the former. The compounds had predominantly bacteriostatic effect and may serve as a starting point for novel anti-Yersinia drugs.
