Using projection operators with maximum overlap methods to simplify challenging self-consistent field optimization

Hector H. Corzo et al.

Summary: The study introduces a projection operator framework for non-AUFBAU orbital selection in maximum overlap methods, presenting the PMOM and PIMOM algorithms which perform well with simple user-defined target solutions. Additionally, a new metric is proposed to measure agreement between desired targets and SCF results in calculations using maximum overlap methods.

Variational Density Functional Calculations of Excited States: Conical Intersection and Avoided Crossing in Ethylene Bond Twisting

Yorick L. A. Schmerwitz et al.

Summary: A variational, time-independent density functional approach is used to accurately describe the energy surfaces of twisting and pyramidal distortion in ethylene, even with the use of a semilocal functional approximation. The findings suggest the possibility of using a single determinant time-independent density functional approach for simulating nonadiabatic dynamics in large systems.

Vibronic and Environmental Effects in Simulations of Optical Spectroscopy

Tim J. Zuehlsdorff et al.

Summary: Including both environmental and vibronic effects is crucial for accurate simulation of optical spectra. Two approaches are outlined in the study, one based on static snapshots of chromophore-environment configurations and the other on dynamic excitation energies for time-correlated snapshots. Both approaches show significant potential for advancing accurate optical spectroscopy simulations of complex condensed phase systems.

Nonadiabatic couplings from a variational excited state method based on constrained DFT

Pablo Ramos et al.

Summary: Excited Constrained Density Functional Theory (XCDFT) is a variational excited state method that extends ground state DFT to compute low-lying excited states by introducing a constraint of one electron in the virtual orbitals. The study presents a theory and implementation for evaluating nonadiabatic coupling vectors (NACVs) between the first excited state computed with XCDFT and the ground state, showing that XCDFT is a viable method for nonadiabatic dynamics simulations.

First principles theoretical spectroscopy of methylene blue: Between limitations of time-dependent density functional theory approximations and its realistic description in the solvent

Thiago B. de Queiroz et al.

Summary: In this study, a non-empirical optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional was used with TDDFT to investigate the optical excitations of gas phase and solvated methylene blue. By considering explicit solute polarization and solvent-solute intermolecular interactions, the optical gap of methylene blue was successfully described, with the results validated against first-principles calculations and experimental data. This methodology is expected to perform well in describing solvated spectra of pi-conjugated systems.

Photoelectron Spectra of Gd2O2- and Nonmonotonic Photon- Energy-Dependent Variations in Populations of Close-Lying Neutral States

Jarrett L. Mason et al.

Summary: The photoelectron spectra of Gd2O2- exhibit numerous close-lying neutral states with photon-energy-dependent relative intensities. These transitions are attributed to one-or two-electron transitions to the ground and low-lying excited neutral states, while an additional manifold of electronic states within a higher binding energy range remains unassigned. The simpler electronic structure of Gd2O2- compared to Sm2O- allows for better resolution of the transitions, providing insights into the effects of photon energy on the observed spectra.

Influence of non-adiabatic effects on linear absorption spectra in the condensed phase: Methylene blue

Angus J. Dunnett et al.

Summary: Modeling linear absorption spectra of solvated chromophores accounting for both environmental and non-adiabatic effects is challenging but crucial. The proposed approach parameterizes a linear vibronic coupling (LVC) Hamiltonian from energy gap fluctuations calculated along MD trajectories, enabling accurate description of vibrational-driven population transfer between electronic states. The method, combining T-TEDOPA with LVC Hamiltonian parameterizations from MD, provides an efficient and attractive way to describe a variety of systems in complex environments from first principles.

New Photoelectron-Valence Electron Interactions Evident in the Photoelectron Spectrum of Gd2O-

Jarrett L. Mason et al.

Summary: Strong photoelectron-valence electron interactions were observed in the anion photoelectron spectra of several lanthanide suboxide clusters, with Gd2O- showing numerous electronic transitions despite its seemingly simple electronic structure. The intensity of transitions to excited states increased with lower photon energy, indicating shakeup transitions. Intense spectral features between 0.7 and 2.3 eV involved detachment of electrons from outer-valence orbitals with Gd 6s contributions, suggesting parallel transition manifolds. Some perpendicular transitions were also observed, with a proposed explanation involving interactions between ejected electrons and high-spin neutrals.

Delta SCF Dyson orbitals and pole strengths from natural ionization orbitals

Hassan Harb et al.

Summary: The calculation of photoionization cross sections is crucial for spectral assignments and in this study, formal relationships were established between pole strengths and terms related to the natural ionization orbital model for Delta SCF calculations. Numerical calculations using the developed models were conducted, and the pole strength values computed using two different approaches for Delta SCF calculations showed excellent agreement with an electron propagator theory model.
