A robust and efficient line search for self-consistent field iterations

Michael F. Herbst et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel adaptive damping algorithm for self-consistent field (SCF) iterations in Kohn-Sham density-functional theory is proposed. The algorithm adjusts the damping in each SCF step using a backtracking line search based on a theoretically sound and accurate energy model. Unlike traditional SCF schemes, this algorithm is fully automatic and does not require user input for selecting the damping parameter. The algorithm is successfully applied to various challenging systems, including elongated supercells, surfaces, and transition-metal alloys.

Nonadiabatic Dynamics at Metal Surfaces: Fewest Switches Surface Hopping with Electronic Relaxation

Zuxin Jin et al.

Summary: A new scheme is proposed for modeling molecular nonadiabatic dynamics near metal surfaces, utilizing the charge-transfer character of such dynamics. This scheme allows the construction of an efficient reduced representation for the electronic structure, and modification of the FSSH approach to include electronic relaxation. The resulting FSSH-ER method is validated across a wide range of coupling strengths, with plans to integrate it with ab initio electronic structure calculations in future work.

Benchmarking Quasiclassical Mapping Hamiltonian Methods for Simulating Cavity-Modified Molecular Dynamics

Maximilian A. C. Saller et al.

Summary: Recent experimental realizations have shown the strong coupling between optical cavity modes and molecular matter, offering new opportunities for controlling chemical processes. The development of accurate, flexible, and cost-effective numerical methods is crucial for simulating cavity-modified dynamics of complex systems. The study found that LSC-based methods using a modified form of the identity operator are accurate and efficient, making them promising for simulating cavity-modified dynamics of complex chemical systems.

High-order geometric integrators for representation-free Ehrenfest dynamics

Seonghoon Choi et al.

Summary: Ehrenfest dynamics is a useful approximation for treating electronically nonadiabatic effects in mixed quantum-classical molecular dynamics, which conserves the total molecular energy and the norm of the electronic wavefunction. Efficient geometric integrators have been developed for representation-free Ehrenfest dynamics, ensuring accuracy regardless of the time step used.

Determining the Effect of Hot Electron Dissipation on Molecular Scattering Experiments at Metal Surfaces

Connor L. Box et al.

Summary: The study examines nonadiabatic effects in thermal and light-driven chemistry on metal surfaces, particularly focusing on the scattering of NO on Au(111). The results indicate that electronic friction theory accurately predicts some aspects of the reaction, but underestimates certain energy loss and overestimates molecular trapping. More sophisticated theories may be required to address these discrepancies in dynamic processes in catalysis and surface chemistry.
