Neuroplasticity and inflammatory alterations in the nucleus accumbens are corrected after risperidone treatment in a schizophrenia-related developmental model in rats

Summary: Increased dopaminergic activity in the striatum is associated with psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia. Risperidone treatment in adult rats with neonatal ventral hippocampus lesion improved neuronal atrophy and dendritic spine morphology impairments in the ventral striatum, while also normalizing pro-inflammatory pathways and inducing antioxidant activity. This suggests that Risperidone has neurotrophic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects in addition to its canonical antipsychotic mechanism.
