Health Literacy, Cognitive Function, and Mortality in Patients With Heart Failure

Tyler A. Kuhn et al.

Summary: This study found that cognitive functioning predicted mortality better than health literacy in patients with heart failure. The results suggest the need to further evaluate the impact of cognitive functioning on increased risk of mortality in those with heart failure.

Self-Care Behavior and Associated Factors among Heart Failure Patients in Tigray, Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Tsegu Hailu Gebru et al.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of self-care behavior and associated factors among heart failure patients in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Factors such as age, educational level, comorbidity, knowledge about heart failure, and social support were found to be significantly associated with self-care behavior. Healthcare providers should focus on patient education to enhance self-care behavior.

Dynamic factor analysis of seasonal variation in daily physical activity in individuals with heart failure and implanted cardiac devices

Michael J. Shoemaker et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the presence and magnitude of seasonal variation in daily physical activity in heart failure patients through retrospective study and dynamic factor analysis. The results showed distinct states/trends, including a seasonal variation pattern and a decline pattern over 12 months, associated with specific clinical characteristics. Patients with low comorbidities, better NYHA Class, higher BMI, no hospitalization, and male sex demonstrated greater seasonal variation, while female sex and hospitalization were associated with overall downward trajectories over the year.

Effects of Depression on Heart Failure Self-Care

Kenneth E. Freedland et al.

Summary: Depression, perceived stress, anxiety, and low social support are associated with poor self-care in hospitalized patients with heart failure. Patients with a combination of psychosocial problems, including symptoms of depression, stress, anxiety, and inadequate social support, may have difficulties with self-care that increase their risk for hospitalization. Further research on broad-spectrum psychosocial interventions is needed for heart failure patients with self-care deficits.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of motivational interviewing in reducing health-care service use and all-cause mortality in heart failure patients. Results suggest that including caregivers in the intervention can help reduce mortality in HF patients. Further studies with stronger intervention and longer follow-up are needed to clarify the benefits of motivational interviewing on health-care service use and mortality.
