Unrecognized Ant Megadiversity in Monsoonal Australia: Diversity and Its Distribution in the Hyperdiverse Monomorium nigrius Forel Group

Alan N. Andersen et al.

Summary: This study documents the diversity and distribution of the Monomorium nigrius Forel group in the hyperdiverse Australian monsoonal tropics. The analysis reveals that monsoonal Australia is an unrecognized global centre of ant diversity, with high species turnover within and among bioregions. The study estimates that there are over 200 species in the M. nigrius group in monsoonal Australia and over 300 species overall.

Trophic ecology of the arboreal and ground ant communities in forests and savannas of central Brazil

Jesica Vieira et al.

Summary: The study found that arboreal ant species on average occupied lower trophic positions than ground-dwelling species, likely due to a prevalence of genera in the arboreal stratum that rely heavily on plant and insect exudates. However, there was no difference in mean delta N-15 between savanna and forest communities, indicating that differences in the relative availability of protein and carbohydrates sources for ants in these habitats are small or non-significant. The savanna ant community had a greater delta C-13 than the forest community due to the abundance of C-4 grasses, but the difference was relatively small as few savanna species derived most of their carbon from C-4-based food webs.
