The antioxidant icariin protects porcine oocytes from age-related damage in vitro

Jae-Wook Yoon et al.

Summary: The study discovered that the use of icariin (ICA) during in vitro aging significantly reduced reactive oxygen species activity, increased the expression of antioxidant genes, and prevented spindle formation and chromosomal alignment defects. Additionally, ICA was found to prevent apoptosis and increase the expression of antiapoptotic genes, showing potential for improving assisted reproductive technologies.

Summary: The study showed that the use of resveratrol (RV) can improve the survival rate of oocytes and reduce the level of ROS in aged oocytes, thereby resisting damage during aging by increasing the expression of antioxidant genes.

Summary: Exposure to PFOS during oocyte maturation in cows resulted in delayed embryo development, altered gene expression and DNA methylation patterns, which may impact female fertility. The effects were more pronounced at higher exposure concentrations.

Maturation conditions, post-ovulatory age, medium pH, and ER stress affect [Ca2+]i oscillation patterns in mouse oocytes

Rui-Ying Yuan et al.

Summary: The study found that oocytes released to the oviduct at 17 hours post-hCG showed stronger [Ca2+]i oscillation. Oscillations in acidic conditions were weaker, while in vitro-matured oocytes had lower frequency and peak. Endoplasmic reticulum stress severely affected [Ca2+]i oscillation parameters.

Mitochondrial enrichment in infertile patients: a review of different mitochondrial replacement therapies

Cristina Rodriguez-Varela et al.

Summary: Poor ovarian responders often have decreased follicular pool and low oocyte quality, which can negatively impact IVF outcomes. Mitochondrial dysfunction and low count have been linked to poor oocyte quality, motivating the exploration of mitochondrial enrichment as a potential therapy. Heterologous and autologous approaches are available, with autologous transfer being considered to address issues of heteroplasmy, although it has not shown significant improvement in clinical outcomes yet. Additional trials are needed to confirm the efficacy of these techniques. Antioxidants like coenzyme-Q10 and melatonin may also play a role in improving mitochondrial function in low-prognosis infertile patients, but further research is required.
