Shock wave determination of temperature dependence of twinning stress in vanadium and tantalum

Amit Sher et al.

Summary: The temperature dependencies of twinning stress in pure polycrystalline BCC vanadium and tantalum were established using shock wave experiments. The results provide insights into the mechanism of twins nucleation and growth.

The defect evolution in 1-D shocked tantalum single crystals

B. Pang et al.

Summary: Tantalum single crystals were impacted by 1-D planar shock waves with pressures of 6.4 GPa, 15.4 GPa, and 21.7 GPa along [001], [011], and [111] directions. Deformation twins were observed in the 15.4 GPa and 21.7 GPa shocked samples, while they were absent in the 6.4 GPa samples. The shock-induced dislocation structure was found to be largely random, possibly due to the release wave. TEM observations also indicated surface relaxation.

Shock-induced twinning in polycrystalline vanadium: I. twinning stress

A. Hazan et al.

Summary: Shock-induced twinning was studied in 3 mm thick vanadium samples of commercial purity at room temperature. Microscopic examinations showed twins in vanadium grains, with Transmission electron microscopy characterization revealing the mechanism of twin formation and determining the twinning stress as 0.68 GPa.
