Winner-Loser Species Replacements in Human-Modified Landscapes

Bruno K. C. Filgueiras et al.

Summary: Community assembly plays a key role in driving the provision of ecosystem services, with 'winner and loser' replacements in tropical forests showing significant impacts on ecological organization. Most replacements involve native species and are driven by changes in resource availability. Species dispersal is a powerful force controlling community (re)assembly, leading to a complete functional reorganization of assemblages.

Functional biogeography of Neotropical moist forests: Trait-climate relationships and assembly patterns of tree communities

Bruno X. Pinho et al.

Summary: This research examines the functional profile of regional tree species pools in Neotropical moist forests and tests trait-climate relationships among local communities. It was found that opportunistic strategies are more dominant in local communities further from the equator, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. Climate was found to explain up to 57% of the variation in community abundance-weighted means (CWMs), influencing the prevalence of certain functional traits in different climatic conditions.
