Lignin valorization beyond energy use: has lignin's time finally come?

Chunbao Charles Xu et al.

Summary: Driven by the commercial availability of kraft lignin and hydrolysis lignin, there is a pressing need to valorize lignin for high-value chemical and material products. The engineering approach developed involves depolymerizing lignin into de-polymerized lignin and utilizing it to substitute petroleum-based compounds in the production of bio-based resins and foams, demonstrating technical and economic feasibility with a payback period of around 3 years for a commercial capacity of 40,000 t/y. This approach shows that lignin valorization beyond energy use can be profitable, marking a potential shift in the perception of lignin's value.

Lignin-Based Polyurethane: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Xiaozhen Ma et al.

Summary: Lignin has been explored as a raw material for polyurethane synthesis due to its abundance, renewable nature, and surface hydroxyl groups. It offers superior product performance without competing with food supply. Challenges such as product isolation, heterogeneity, aggregation, steric hindrance, and low activity hinder its full utilization in polyurethane production.

Fabrication and characterization of carbon foams using 100% Kraft lignin

Qiangu Yan et al.

Summary: Carbon foams were prepared using Kraft lignin as the sole resource without the need for additional catalysts or agents. The resulting lignin carbon foam exhibited open-cell structure and showed increased compressive strength, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity with higher bulk densities. Furthermore, the foam displayed excellent fire resistance and resistance to subterranean termites.

Development of lignin-based carbon foam for use as an FRP sandwich core material

Limin Bao et al.

Summary: Sandwich-structure materials consist of a high-strength skin material and a lightweight core material, offering excellent mechanical properties and low weight advantages. However, soft-core materials with low rigidity may not perform adequately in sandwich structures. This research aimed to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable development by developing high-strength carbon foam and enhancing its mechanical properties.
