Evolution of the microstructure and mechanical properties of an sigma-hardened high-entropy alloy at different annealing temperatures

Lu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examined the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of a high-entropy alloy and provided valuable insights on predicting sigma-phase formation in alloy design. Interaction between alloying elements and principal elements can affect recrystallization, leading to formation of partially recrystallized microstructures across a wider temperature range. Control of the proportion of recrystallized and non-recrystallized grains is crucial in managing strength and ductility, with factors like sigma particles and deformation twinning influencing alloy characteristics.

On the development of a novel multi-phase high entropy alloy with transformation-induced plasticity effect

Amin Radi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior of a novel high entropy alloy (HEA) through thermo-mechanical processing, revealing the influence of annealing temperatures on phase distribution and the contribution of sigma phase to mechanical response. The transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) characteristics of samples subjected to annealing are analyzed, showing the designed TRIP-assisted multi-phase HEA can achieve a combination of high yield strength and ductility.

Effect of thermally induced B2 phase on the corrosion behavior of an Al0.3CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy

Z. J. Shi et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni high entropy alloys (HEAs) is affected by B2 phases, which lead to easier pit initiation and propagation, as evidenced by microstructure characterization and electrochemical measurements. The detrimental effect of B2 phases on the corrosion resistance of Al0.3CoCrFeNi HEAs is confirmed in this study.

Hierarchical precipitates, sequential deformation-induced phase transformation, and enhanced back stress strengthening of the micro-alloyed high entropy alloy

Guanghui Yang et al.

Summary: The annealing time-dependence microstructures and deformation mechanisms of the novel face-centered cubic Fe49.5Mn30Co10Cr10C0.2Ti0.1V0.1 Mou HEA are reported in this study. Three types of precipitates, sigma-phase, Cr-rich MC-type carbides, and nano-scale (Ti, V, Mo)C, are present after cold-rolling and annealing. The hierarchical precipitates can lead to sluggish recrystallization and grain growth. The deformation mechanisms change with annealing time, with dislocation glide, deformation twinning, and deformation-induced epsilon phase observed for short annealing times, and a more complex transformation for longer annealing times. The material annealed for 10 hours shows superior strain hardening capacity and strength-ductility combination.

Summary: In this study, the cyclic oxidation and electrochemical corrosion behaviors of CoCrFeNiAlx high entropy alloys produced by resistance sintering were investigated. The results showed that increasing the Al content can enhance the cyclic oxidation resistance of the HEAs but also decrease their corrosion resistance in acid and saltwater environments.

Mingliang Wang et al.

Summary: A novel Ti(C,N)-reinforced BCC-based Cr20Cu20Fe20Ni20Al20 high-entropy alloy composite coating was prepared using synchronized powder feeding plasma transferred arc cladding. The coating exhibited a core-shell structure with high strength and toughness, resulting in improved wear resistance mainly through mild abrasive wear. The microhardness and wear resistance of the composite coating were significantly higher than those of the substrate and pure HEA coating.
