Synergistic Effects of Cerium-Based Rare Earth Addition and Hot Deformation on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Mg-0.5Zn-0.5Zr Magnesium Alloy

Hooman Abedi et al.

Summary: The addition of RE can effectively refine the microstructure of the alloy, but high RE content may lead to less effective grain refinement and the appearance of coarse dendritic microstructure. Extrusion results in fragmentation and dispersion of intermetallics, as well as significant grain refinement due to recrystallization processes.

Superplasticity of high-entropy alloys: a review

Reza Motallebi et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a new class of engineering materials with unique mechanical and functional properties. Superplastic forming of HEAs might be a viable route for actual applications of these alloys. This monograph summarized the superplastic behaviors of HEAs and medium-entropy alloys (MEAs), along with reviewing the basics of high-entropy alloys and fine-grained superplasticity.

Enhanced mechanical properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy by inoculation and hot deformation

Mohammad Sajad Mehranpour et al.

Summary: The study focused on enhancing the mechanical properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy through the addition of a newly developed Al-5Ti-2B master alloy and subsequent hot extrusion process for structural refinement. The results showed that the grain refinement achieved through the addition of the master alloy and hot extrusion process led to an improvement in mechanical properties, with a superior strength-ductility trade-off compared to the as-cast counterparts. This was attributed to the disappearance of the grain boundary beta-Mg17Al12 phase and the formation of a recrystallized and homogeneous microstructure in the extruded alloys.

Mechanical properties enhancement of Mg-4Si in-situ composites by friction stir processing

R. Taghiabadi et al.

Summary: Friction stir processing significantly improves the mechanical properties of Mg-4Si composite, with specific traverse and rotation speeds yielding the best results. The alloy's performance enhancement is mainly attributed to the effective refinement and even distribution of Mg2Si particles, the formation of ultrafine grains, and the elimination of casting defects.

Enhanced tensile properties of as-cast Mg-10Al magnesium alloy via strontium addition and hot working

Fereshte Ghorbani et al.

Summary: The study focused on grain refinement and enhancement of tensile properties of a Mg-10Al magnesium alloy ingot through strontium addition (up to 1 wt%) and hot working (extrusion process). Addition of 0.05 wt% Sr led to grain refinement and the best strength-ductility combination. Extruded alloys exhibited significantly higher strength and ductility compared to as-cast ingots, with UTS of around 406 MPa and total elongation of about 24% achieved for the alloy with 0.05 wt% Sr.

Synergistic effects of alloying, homogenization, and hot extrusion on the mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-Al-Ca magnesium alloys

Zahra Nasiri et al.

Summary: The synergistic effects of partial replacement of Al with Ca, homogenization heat treatment, and hot extrusion on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-(7-x)Al-xCa magnesium alloys were studied. Homogenization resulted in eutectic constituents spheroidization and tensile ductility improvement, while hot extrusion led to fragmentation and dispersion of particles, formation of fine microstructures, and profound enhancements of tensile properties. The extruded AX43 alloy showed significantly better product of strength and ductility compared to the as-cast counterpart.

Enhanced mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-Al-Ca magnesium alloys by friction stir processing

Zahra Nasiri et al.

Summary: Friction stir processing leads to significant grain refinement and enhancement of mechanical properties in magnesium alloys. Calcium-containing alloys show more intense grain refinement due to the presence of thermally-stable Al-Ca intermetallics. The AX43 alloy with a grain size of 1.7µm exhibits the best tensile properties.

Mehrab Lotfpour et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of calcium addition and hot extrusion process on the microstructure modification and mechanical properties enhancement of Mg-3Si metal matrix composite. It was found that calcium addition modified the Mg2Si phase and refined the matrix grains, while hot extrusion induced extreme grain refinement and break up of the eutectic structure, leading to remarkable improvements in tensile properties.

Summary: The study found that magnesium-copper alloys with low copper content and solid solution treatment exhibit better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, while alloys with higher copper content are prone to corrosion. The decrease in Mg2Cu phase content in the solid solution treated alloys leads to improved corrosion resistance and better biocompatibility.
