Quantitative study of the corrosion evolution and stress corrosion cracking of high strength aluminum alloys in solution and thin electrolyte layer containing Cl-

Liwei Wang et al.

Summary: The research explored the stress corrosion cracking behavior of 2024-T351 and 7075-T651 in solution and thin electrolyte layer (TEL) through various tests. It was found that corrosion in TEL is more severe than in solution, with different levels of SCC susceptibility in the two alloys. The degradation in TEL is primarily dominated by corrosion-induced hydrogen, while the elongation loss in solution is controlled by the synergistic effect of stress, corrosion, and hydrogen.

Quantitative calibration of the relationship between Volta potential measured by scanning Kelvin probe force microscope (SKPFM) and hydrogen concentration

Zhaoxiang Ma et al.

Summary: The quantitative relationship between the Volta potential measured by SKPFM and hydrogen concentration values on the pure nickel surface has been calibrated. It was found that the Volta potential sharply decreases with the increase of hydrogen concentration in the low range, but the change becomes less considerable at high levels. The relationship is described by a modified Nernst equation model.

Effect of precipitate coherency on the corrosion-induced hydrogen trapping in 2024 aluminum alloy

H. Kamoutsi et al.

Summary: The coherency state between precipitates and the matrix was found to play a significant role in hydrogen trapping in aluminum alloy 2024. Artificial aging treatments and corrosion exposure were used to investigate the mechanism of hydrogen trapping. The study demonstrated that hydrogen evolution and trapping are influenced by the coherency state, providing insights into the factors affecting hydrogen embrittlement in high-strength aluminum alloys.

Summary: The study found that by controlling the distribution of soluble second phase particles, the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the alloy can be improved, but an excessive increase in second phase particles can make the alloy more sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement.

Hydrogen enhanced cracking via dynamic formation of grain boundary inside aluminium crystal

De-Gang Xie et al.

Summary: In situ bending tests inside an environmental transmission electron microscope revealed that dislocations emitted from the precrack tip of single crystalline aluminum cantilevers self-organized to form a low angle grain boundary (LAGB) in hydrogen atmosphere, facilitating crack propagation. Atomistic modeling indicated that the LAGB can strongly trap hydrogen atoms and reduce its cohesive strength. These findings suggest that hydrogen-induced transgranular cracks in polycrystalline metals may involve the formation and separation of hydrogenated LAGBs in grains.
