Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on suicidal behavior: A systematic review

Gianluca Serafini et al.

Summary: The efficacy and tolerability of rTMS in treating major depression is well-documented, but its effects on suicidal behavior require further investigation. Studies have shown the left DLPFC to be the most common stimulation target, with bilateral rTMS in combination with antidepressants appearing to be the most effective treatment. Further longitudinal studies are needed to replicate these findings.

Summary: This article is based on a consensus conference held in Siena, Italy in October 2018, aiming to update safety guidelines for the application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). New emerging issues discussed include safety concerns with recently developed stimulation devices, novel scenarios of TMS applications, and ethical considerations regarding neuroenhancement.

Adverse events of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in older adults with depression, a systematic review of the literature

Geke M. Overvliet et al.

Summary: In the last decade, rTMS has been used as a non-invasive neuromodulation therapy for depression, but little is known about its adverse events in older adults with late-life depression. This article reviewed 11 studies involving a total of 353 patients, finding that 12.4% of older adults with LLD treated with rTMS experienced adverse events, with serious adverse events reported in 1.5% of cases. Common adverse events included headache and discomfort at the stimulation site, while more serious events included psychiatric hospitalization and increased suicide ideation.
