Dealing with heterogeneity of cognitive dysfunction in acute depression: a clustering approach

Muriel Vicent-Gil et al.

Summary: This study identified cognitive heterogeneity among patients with major depressive disorder, with treatment resistance and cognitive performance being the most important factors for clustering, resulting in three empirical subgroups. Therefore, assessing cognition is essential for all MDD patients, and non-resistant patients may also exhibit significant cognitive deficits.

What Is Normal Cognition in Depression? Prevalence and Functional Correlates of Normative Versus Idiographic Cognitive Impairment

Tanya Tran et al.

Summary: The study suggests that using an idiographic approach to assess cognitive functioning in individuals with MDD may better capture the challenges for functional recovery compared to traditional normative methods. While only a quarter of the sample would be classified as cognitively impaired based on normative comparisons, over 60% were classified as idiographically impaired, showing a stronger relationship with perceived functional competence. Depressive symptoms did not show significant correlation with either normative or idiographic impairment.

Sex differences in the association between symptom profiles and cognitive functioning in patients with depressive disorder

Shuai Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the association between symptom profiles and cognitive impairment in male and female patients with depressive disorder. Female patients performed better in information processing speed, while different symptom profiles were independently associated with specific cognitive functions in male and female patients.

Intelligence and academic achievement in inpatient adolescents with comorbid anxiety and depression

Anna P. Schrack et al.

Summary: The study found that higher severity of depression was associated with lower reading and writing achievement, while higher severity of anxiety was associated with higher scores on reading and writing. However, full-scale IQ was not significantly predictive of anxiety and depression severity.
