In-situ observations and acoustic measurements upon fragmentation of free-floating intermetallics under ultrasonic cavitation in water

Abhinav Priyadarshi et al.

Summary: Grain refinement in alloys through ultrasonic melt processing involves the fragmentation of primary crystals by cavitation-induced action in liquid metals. A transparent test rig was developed to observe the fragmentation potential of free-floating primary Al3Zr particles under ultrasonic excitation in water. Real-time high-speed imaging was used to capture the dynamic interaction of shock waves with intermetallic particles, leading to their fragmentation and subsequent analysis of fragment size distribution and crack patterns. The application of ultrasound was shown to rapidly reduce intermetallic size and increase potential nucleation sites for grain refinement in aluminium alloys.

Mechanisms of ultrasonic de-agglomeration of oxides through in-situ high-speed observations and acoustic measurements

Abhinav Priyadarshi et al.

Summary: This study observed the influence of ultrasonic cavitation on SiO2 and MgO agglomerates through real-time high-speed imaging, showing that ultrasound-induced microbubble clusters were predominantly responsible for the breakage and dispersion of oxide agglomerates, providing new experimental observations for the de-agglomeration of oxides.

Characterization of shock waves in power ultrasound

Summary: This study investigates the shock wave pressures emitted by cavitating bubbles in water under ultrasonic excitation, revealing a resonance peak at a narrow range of frequencies and suggesting its association with shock wave emissions from collapsing bubbles. Results show an increasing pressure shielding effect with higher input power.

Summary: This study focuses on the numerical simulation of two competing ultrasonic treatment strategies for microstructure refinement in aluminium alloy casting. The results suggest that using UST in the launder with baffle separators can lead to a more uniform distribution of refining particles.

New insights into sono-exfoliation mechanisms of graphite: In situ high-speed imaging studies and acoustic measurements

Justin A. Morton et al.

Summary: By observing the impact of ultrasound and acoustic cavitation on the exfoliation process of graphite in real-time, the dynamic sequence of graphite layer exfoliation was revealed. The generation of pressures up to 5 MPa and liquid jet velocities of 80 m/s were found to be crucial for the initiation and propagation of the exfoliation process, while bubble oscillations associated with stable cavitation were beneficial for promoting a gentler delamination of graphite layers.
