Prediction of soil organic carbon and the C:N ratio on a national scale using machine learning and satellite data: A comparison between Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3 and Landsat-8 images

Tao Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, satellite sensors (Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3) were used with machine learning techniques to predict soil organic carbon content and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in Switzerland. Results showed that models based on Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 performed better in predicting SOC content, while Sentinel-3 performed better in predicting C:N ratio at coarse resolutions. The study also highlighted the importance of remote sensing variables in soil prediction models of various scales.

Digital Mapping of Soil Organic Carbon Using Sentinel Series Data: A Case Study of the Ebinur Lake Watershed in Xinjiang

Xiaohang Li et al.

Summary: This study selected the Ebinur Lake Basin in the arid region as the typical research area and analyzed the distribution of soil organic carbon using multiple remote sensing data sources and environmental factors. Seven models were constructed and predicted using machine learning methods, with the Random Forest model showing better accuracy than the Cubist model, particularly in small-scale arid areas.

Prediction of Soil Organic Carbon under Different Land Use Types Using Sentinel-1/-2 Data in a Small Watershed

Huan Wang et al.

Summary: This study successfully estimated the soil organic carbon (SOC) content under different land use types using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery, optical satellite imagery, and digital elevation model (DEM) data. The results showed that the prediction model had the highest accuracy for orchards, followed by dry land and paddy fields. This study demonstrates the potential application of remote sensing data in soil property monitoring.

Mapping soil organic carbon stocks and trends with satellite-driven high resolution maps over South Africa

Zander S. Venter et al.

Summary: Estimating and monitoring soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is crucial for maintaining soil productivity and meeting climate change targets. Using satellite-driven machine learning, we mapped SOC stocks under natural vegetation in South Africa over 35 years, showing changes in SOC stocks and trends across different biomes.

Adaptive management in restoration initiatives: Lessons learned from some of South Africa's projects

Hloniphani Moyo et al.

Summary: The study assessed three woodland restoration initiatives in South Africa and found their limited emphasis on sustainable livelihood driven outcomes, mainly focusing on restoring biodiversity, ecosystem infrastructure, and ecosystem services. A modified livelihood framework was proposed, emphasizing a more inclusive approach towards achieving positive human outcome-driven restoration of degraded woodlands. Restoration initiatives should invest in ecosystem restoration in the context of sustainable development goals, to enhance people's livelihoods, and address climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Suffrutex grasslands in south-central Angola: belowground biomass, root structure, soil characteristics and vegetation dynamics of the 'underground forests of Africa'

Amandio L. Gomes et al.

Summary: This study assesses woody belowground biomass and carbon stocks, soil properties, and human impact on two common suffrutex grasslands on the Angolan Central Plateau. Results show that the BGB of Brachystegia grasslands almost equals the AGB of neighboring miombo woodlands, and Parinari grasslands burn almost twice as frequent as Brachystegia grasslands.
