Large-scale protein level comparison of Deltaproteobacteria reveals cohesive metabolic groups

Marguerite V. Langwig et al.

Summary: Deltaproteobacteria, proposed to be the phyla Desulfobacterota, Myxococcota, and SAR324, are ubiquitous in marine environments and play essential roles in global carbon, sulfur, and nutrient cycling. A genomic catalog of 1,792 genomes, including 402 newly reconstructed metagenome-assembled genomes, reveals previously unrecognized metabolic abilities and expands our understanding of the diversity and ecological roles of these bacteria.

Experimentally-validated correlation analysis reveals new anaerobic methane oxidation partnerships with consortium-level heterogeneity in diazotrophy

Kyle S. Metcalfe et al.

Summary: Archaeal anaerobic methanotrophs (ANME) and sulfate-reducing Deltaproteobacteria (SRB) form symbiotic multicellular consortia capable of anaerobic methane oxidation (AOM), modulating methane flux from marine sediments. The specificity with which ANME associate with particular SRB partners in situ was studied, revealing a strong positive correlation between ANME-2b and a clade of Deltaproteobacteria termed SEEP-SRB1g. Further analysis showed the presence of a complete nifHDK operon required for diazotrophy in SEEP-SRB1g, indicating the potential for nitrogen fixation in these consortia.

Community-led, integrated, reproducible multi-omics with anvi'o

A. Murat Eren et al.

Summary: In microbiology, there is an abundance of big data, but the workflows designed to interpret the data may constrain the biological questions that can be asked. Anvi'o, a community-led multi-omics platform, is maturing into an open software ecosystem that reduces constraints in 'omics data analyses.

Characterization of the first cultured free-living representative of Candidatus Izemoplasma uncovers its unique biology

Rikuan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study successfully isolated a representative strain of Izemoplasma from a deep-sea methane seep, providing detailed insights into its physiological, genomic, and metabolic characteristics. The novel strain demonstrated strong DNA-degradation potentials and the ability to utilize extracellular DNA for growth. The proposed new species and genus Xianfuyuplasma coldseepsis based on the description of strain zrk13 contributes to a better understanding of the metabolic potential and ecological role of Izemoplasma bacteria in deep ocean biogeochemical cycling.
