Social Entrepreneurship as 'Doing Good' by Mitigating Opposition Better

Richard J. Arend

Summary: This study complements emerging theory-building in social entrepreneurship by adopting a new perspective. The main finding is that opposing interests are the key reason for the failure to carry out actions that would improve social welfare. By drawing on economic concepts and logical reasoning, the study develops a typology of problems related to improving social welfare and identifies the opposing forces that hinder their implementation. Based on this analysis, the study describes the characteristics that would be helpful in providing solutions and mitigating opposition. The study argues that, in specific problems, social entrepreneurs are likely to possess a relatively better set of characteristics compared to other institutions, such as local governmental agencies. The implications for research, management, and policy are also discussed.

Value creation and appropriation in economic, social, and environmental domains: Recognizing and resolving the institutionalized asymmetries

Paavo Ritala et al.

Summary: Value creation and appropriation have been studied extensively in the fields of business and management, focusing largely on economic contexts. This has led to asymmetries in managing the relationship between business, society, and the environment. There is a tendency for over-appropriation of value in the economic domain compared to social and environmental domains, as well as in the social domain compared to the environmental domain. Existing organizational practices like corporate social responsibility and sustainable business models aim to address these asymmetries, but face criticism and challenges.

Wenqing Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that sharing achievement has a positive influence on social entrepreneurial intention (SEI), with perceived social worth mediating the relationship between them. Additionally, social entrepreneurial self-efficacy (SESE) not only moderates the relationship between perceived social worth and SEI but also positively moderates the overall mediation model. The study enriches the push/pull theory by examining the influence mechanisms of sharing achievements on SEI.
