Maximizing the total population with logistic growth in a patchy environment

Kentaro Nagahara et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on a nonlinear optimization problem in population biology, investigating the effects of dispersal and spatial heterogeneity on the total population. The study aims to maximize the total population by redistributing resources among patches under limited resources. Results show that the global maximizer can be characterized for any number of patches when the diffusion rate is sufficiently small or large.

Current Status of the Algae Production Industry in Europe: An Emerging Sector of the Blue Bioeconomy

Rita Araujo et al.

Summary: The EU Bioeconomy Strategy is aimed at supporting the sustainable growth of EU bio-based sectors, including algae production. This study reveals significant gaps in knowledge about algae production in Europe, but also highlights the potential of the sector. Algae and Spirulina biomass is primarily used for food and food-related applications, with technological, regulatory, and market barriers limiting further development despite the considerable potential for sustainable growth in the European algae sector.

Mixing strategies combined with shape design to enhance productivity of a raceway pond

Olivier Bernard et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on optimizing the growth of microalgae in raceway ponds by exploring mixing strategies and designing the shape of the bottom topographies. A physical-biological coupled model is used to describe the growth of the algae, along with considering a simple model of a mixing device like a paddle wheel. The results suggest that specific mixing strategies and non-trivial topographies can enhance microalgal productivity in raceway ponds.
